Israel New Year Stamps Issued

By MOSS FAIRMONT

World Zionist Press Service

JERUSALEM — It has
become a tradition for the
Israel Post Office to issue a
special series of stamps each
year in honor of the festivals
of Rosh Hashana and Suk-
kot.
The first such set was is-
sued on September 26, 1948,
following the famous defini-
tive "Doar Ivri" stamps. The
set comprised five stamps
with a common design of a

history and culture, the
land of Israel, etc.
This year's festival
stamps are devoted to the
biblical hero, Joshua, who
had the privilege of leading
the children of Israel into
the Promised Land. On the
IS 1.50 stamp, Joshua and
the children of Israel are
depicted after the Lord had
spoken to Joshua and bid
him "Be strong and of good
courage, for thou shalt
cause thy people to inherit
the land which I swore unto

stood still and the moon
stayed, until the nation had
avenged themselves of their
enemies."

Kings of Judah.
In order to ensure as wide
a postal use as possible of
the festival stamps, the de-
nominations chosen were
those appropriate to the
mailing of a greeting card
within Israel, to Europe and
to North America — a prin-
ciple which has been fol-
lowed ever since.

It is interesting to com-
pare the face value of that
1948 set with that of the
1982 issue, 103 prutot
then, 24 shekels today —
almost 2,400 times as
much! In dollars we have
approximately $1 for the
latest set as against $.40
in 1948, which gives us a
more meaningful com-
parison.
This year's issue, which
portrays various incidents
in the life of Joshua, is the
34th set of festival stamps
which have covered a very
wide range of subjects, all
related to Jewish religion,

The IS 5.50 stamp
shows the Ark of the
Covenant being carried
over the River Jordan as
the children of Israel
"passed over on dry
ground." The IS 7.50
stamp brings to life the
story familiar to millions
of men, women and chil-
dren all over the world —
the children of Israel
standing beforce the walls
of the fortified city of
Jericho which crumble to
the ground as Joshua
blows the horn and "the
people raised a great sh-
out."
The fourth stamp of the
series — the IS 9.50 value —
symbolizes the miracle of
the cessation of time during
Joshua's battle against the
kings of Jerusalem, Hebron,
Yarmuth, Lachish and Ag-
lon, when, in answer to
Joshua's prayer, "Sun,
stand thou still upon Gi-
beon, and thou, Moon, in the

Anti-Semitic leaders who
choose to spurn Jews in pub-
lic are sometimes involved
in entanglements with
Jewish people in their pri-
vate lives.
Nicolai Ceacescu, the new

to be furious because his son
recently married a Jewish
woman.
The Ceacescu situation is
not without precedent. In
Russia, both of Joseph Sta-

Jewish spouses.
Stalin's daughter, Svet-
lana, created quite a stir
when she became roman-
tically involved with a
Jewish actor named Kap-
lan. Stalin eventually had
Kaplan sent to a slave
camp in Siberia. Later,
Svetlana married a Jew,
Grisha Mirazov, but her
father forced the couple
into getting a divorce.
Stalin's son, Yakov, also
chose a Jewish spouse.
