ANCHORAGE, Alaska — One.of the greatest chal- lenges facing any artist is to select new material from which to work and then to successfully portray it as original and fresh in his or her own style. Byron Birdsall, a well-known and respected Alaskan artist, meets that challenge con- tinually in his work. Known for his. watercolors of the north- west, his landscapes have gained wide popularity due to his impeccably clean style and intense, rich colors, a style. he refers to as "neorealism." His work has become so well-known in the Pacific Northwest that he was the featured artist in American Artist magazine, a national publication, in April 1981.
