Rosh Hashana 5743

By RABBI MARC --
TANENBAUM

Seven Arts Feature

"This is the day of the cre-
ation of the world. This is
the day on which all crea-
tures of the earth stand
under judgment."
These are phrases from
the mahzor — the Hebrew
prayer-book that is used for
the services of the Jewish
people on Rosh Hashana,
the Jewish New Year,
which begins at sundown
today.
The High Holidays of
Rosh Hashana, climaxed by
Yom Kippur, the Day of
Atonement, are solemn
days that express the uni-
•versal human need for self-
correction, for taking inven-
tory of one's life, and then
seeking through fasting and
repentance to change one's
individual and group exist-
ence for the better.
More so than perhaps
in other years Rosh
Hashana enables us to
confront honestly the
corruptions, bigotry,
greed and selfishness,
and makes us highly con-
scious that the ideas of
moral . judgment, confes-
sion • for wrong-doing,
and determination to
change for the better are
more than simple reli-
gious pieties. These
spiritual disciplines are
the very pivot of a just
and civil society.

PLO Front

NEW YORK — The "No-
vember 29 Coalition" that
sponsored a march in Wash-
ington last Saturday to pro-
test what it calls "the U.S.-
Israeli invasion of Lebanon"
is a pro-PLO alliance corn-
posed primarily of radical
leftist groups, according to
the Anti-Defamation
League of Bnai Brith.
ADL said the coalition
has distributed literature
bearing the imprimatur of
the Palestine Liberation
Organization Information
Office in Washington, D.C.
The coalition has also dis-
tributed reprints from` the
English language publica-
tion of the Popular Front for
the Liberation of Palestine
(PFLP).
The November 29 Coal-
ition, formed last year to
promote support for the
PLO, is named for the
date • designated by the
United Nations as an an-
nual "International Day
of Solidarity with the
Palestinian People."
The ADL report points
out that while on the sur-
face the November29 Coali- _
tion appears to be one of a
number of far-left, pro-PLO
alliances, analysis of its ac-
tivities indicates it is
largely a • de facto alliance
between adherents of the
PFLP "who set the coali-
tion's political 'line' and
organizational strategy,"
and the Workers World
Party, a Trotskyist splinter
party headquartered in
New' York, "which provides
the foot soldiers through-its
own affiliates and front
groups." , .

.der§-core how precarious
human existence is. "Who
shall live and who shall die"
are recurring themes in the
Jewish -prayers, and this
year again they take on
compelling meaning. For
human life continues to be
expendable though nuclear
proliferation, oppression
and tragic conflicts in
Lebanon, Ireland, Af-

ghanistan, Iran, Poland, the
Soviet Union and
elsewhere.
In the fact of such wide-
spread human suffering,
Rosh Hashana encourages
us to do whatever we can to
help redeem and heal an
anguished world through
acts of moral courage, de-
cency, kindness and caring
for human lives.
