For a Healthy and Happy
NEW YEAR
zones, the ORT world is a
unique Jewish educational
network in which, at any
hour of the day, someone,
somewhere on the globe is
receiving an ORT educa-
tion.
A look at a single moment
in time can capture the
unique scope of this ORT
world.
At 7 a.m., while ORT stu-
dents are just waking up in
Mexico City, it is 8 in the
morning in New York
where they are making
their way to classes at the
Bramson ORT Technical
Institute where they will
study courses in electronic
technology, computer pro-
gramming and ophthalmic
technology.
In Miami, students are
on their way to the
Jewish High School of
South Florida where they
will study computer sci-
ence in the school's popu-
lar ORT-run programs. It
is also 8 a.m. in Colombia
and Peru, where young
ORT students are on
their way to begin their
school day in creative
education classes, learn-
ing the basics of their
Jewish heritage and tra-
ditions.
In Buenos Aires, San-
tiago and Caracas, the day
is already an hour older as
ORT students settle into
their seats for classes in
electronics and data proc-
essing and industrial
chemistry, acquiring the
skills they need to build
sound lives for themselves
and satisfy their young
dreams.
In Rio de Janeiro and
Montevideo, it is 10 a.m.
and ORT students are well
into their morning's work in
computer programming,
chemistry and electrical in-
stallation. Like ORT stu-
dents everywhere, they ac-
quire not only the means to
earn a living but an appre-
ciation of Jewish life and
culture which fosters a
worthwhile quality of living
as well.
At the same moment, on
the other side of the Atlan-
tic, it is early afternoon and
ORT Morocco students in
Casablanca are busy learn-
ing executive secretarial
skills and mechanics and
constructive drawing, skills
the children of this Moroc-
can Jewish community will
use to make decent lives for
themselves and their
families.
At the ORT schools in
Paris, Lyon, Strasbourg
and Toulouse, students at
the ORT France network
train in auto mechanics,
industrial electronics,
technical design, micro-
processors, electrical
mechanics and other
high-demand fields.
Many are the children of
North African Jews who
emigrated to France in
the tens of thousands in
recent years.
In Rome and Milan, ORT
students are taking a break
from their science and office
skills classes for some exer-
cise in the gymnasium. Not
long ago, thousands of
Soviet Jews were preparing
for their new lives of free-
dom at ORT schools in
Rome. Today the number
has shrunk with the Soviet
curtailment of Jewish
emigration.
It is late afternoon in Is-
rael and the school day is
drawing to, a close at the
more than 100 ORT schools
and training centers
throughout the country. It
has been a long, tiring, but
productive day in ORT's
comprehensive high
schools, industrial schools,
apprenticeship programs
and the special programs for
disadvantaged youngsters
that ORT operates from
Haifa to Beersheva. Al-
ready a vital part of Israel's
national fabric, many are on
their way to factories where
they fill in for workers who
have been called away to
serve in the army.
Meanwhile, the students
of ORT India are already re-
laxing after supper in Born-
bay. Tomorrow they will re-
sume their studies in
mechanics and secretarial
skills and Hebrew.
The first plane to carry
mail in the U.S. was piloted
by Benjamin Lipsner.
