But back Prof. Mirelman came, and after joining his unit in Lebanon, found him- self dealing not only with military matters, but also with things not far removed from his ordinary preoccu- pations. For example, the diar- rhea which his studies in Rehovot may well help control one day was of much more than aca- demic interest to the sorely afflicted troops. Moreover, Prof. Mirel- man soon found himself arguing with army doc- tors about modes of treatment (for seious cases he favored sulpha drugs over the more usual opium-based anti- diarrheatic), and they fi- nally became convinced that he was right. There was nothing he could do, however, about the eating habits of the soldiers. "If they had stuck to army rations, everything would have been OK; but they stuffed themselves on cake from home and local, far- from-sanitary, food. Hence the diarrhea." In the course of his service in Lebanon he may also have acquired a new graduate student. As standard in front-line Is- raeli units, many of the soldiers were university students, and after a long professional discussion with a student from the Hebrew University, the young man decided he may come to the Institute to work for his PhD with Prof. Mirelman. While some instutute sci- entists hurried back from overseas conferences to join their units, others, who hadn't been called up, went on with conferences in Re- hovot. Thus two meetings were held during the first weeks of the war: the Aha- ron Katzir-Katchalsky Symposium on Biological Structure and Coupled Flow, and the European Molecular Biology Organ- ization (EMBO) course on Hybridomas and Monoc- lonal Antibodies. It is noteworthy, in this connection, that overseas participants were not frightened off by the war; some 95 percent of those scheduled to come from abroad turned up on time. Not all of the local lectur- ers were available, but even those called up tried hard to get leave and put in an ap- pearance. Dr. Michael Steinitz from the Hebrew University, for instance, de- livered his scheduled talk at the EMBO course though he was still wearing a beg- rimed army uniform and still unshaven.
