Israeli Schools Re-Open

JERUSALEM (JN-I) —
Sporting new bookbags and
knapsacks, thousands of Is-
raeli children started first
grade Sept. 1 among the
1.25 million students who
returned to school.
During what the Educa-
tion Ministry termed "the
smoothest school opening in
many years," the new first
graders copied Shalom Kita
Alef (Hello First Grade) in a
lesson that is virtually Is-
raeli ritual.
On the side of innovation,
the Israeli school system
this year will institute
standardized verbal and
math exams to determine
which pupils need special
tutoring, potential high

school dropouts will be
given another chance to
matriculate, the Education
Ministry will encourage the
development of "special
character" schools to serve
local communities and a
committee has been ap-
pointed to intensify studies
Jewish and Zionist identity.
Speaking on the eve
of the school opening,
President Yitzhak Navon
also urged the Education
Ministry to organize pro-
grams intended to bring
together Ashkenazi and
Sephardi, religious and
non-religious students.
Five new Arab elemen-
tary schools were opened, in
addition to four Arab high
schools. Arab teachers still
believe their school system
is lagging behind the
Jewish sector.
A total of 1,257,000 stu-
dents, from kindergarten to
university, will attend Is-
raeli schools this year —
31,000 more than last year.
More than 66,000_ teachers
will instruct them.
