This newfangled trend to
deny the occurrence of the
Holocaust is by no means
restricted to North
America. There are now
more than 40 publications
which purport these beliefs
worldwide.
At the Sorbonne Univer-

ing these doctrines in his
lectures, was charged under

handed down by the Tri-
bunal Grand Inspance in
July 1981 cited three causes
of moral prejudice the total
dismissal as a myth of the
suffering of those who
underwent the ordeal of the
concentration camps,
charging that the victims
were the authors and bene-
factors of a gigantic political
and financial swindle, and
allowing the use of his
works by others for the pur-
pose of justifying war
crimes with the intention of
inciting racial hatred.
Faurisson has since
been dismissed from his
teaching post at the uni-
versity.
A number of Jewish
organizations around the
world have suggested the
reclassification of these
books either under fiction or
anti-Semitism. The fact
that there is a book selec-
tion department in any li-
brary suggests that there is
a criteria of scholarly rele-
vance which accepts or re-
jects books on any given
subject.
The Library of Congress
system used by most lib-
raries in the English-
speaking world offers only
suggested areas of
classification and hence it is
up to the chief librarian at
each library who has the
final decision as to which
shelf a book is to be placed.
To profess that the Jewish
presence in Europe was not
decimated by the Nazi re-
gime and that the entire in-
cident was nothing more
than a hoax perpetrated by
the World Zionist Orgnaiza-
tion, is as absurd as the
claim that the black people
in pre-Civil war America
were not enslaved and that
their story was a plot con-
ceived by the National
Association for the Ad-
vancement of Colored
People.
How would the French
people react if a book was
written which refuted the
fact that their country
was occupied by the
Germans? What if the
Japanese were told to be-
lieve that the bombing of
Hiroshima was but a
mere figment of their im-
agination?
At this point in time, the
claims of these "revisionist
historians" can clearly be
ascertained as being merely
a literary offal designed to
produce an ugly twisting of
the events of history and in
the process provoke anti-
Jewish sentiments. Never-
theless, how many anti-
Semites after reading these
publications will pick up
where Butz and Rassinier
left off?
When the Holocaust shelf
becomes saturated with an
ample number of works in
this new literary-historical
genre, the actuality of the
Nazi's monstrous deeds will
indeed become a hotly-
contested issue.
A further aspect of this
issue is morality. Should it
be the function of
government-supported lib-
raries to purchase material

Hillel Day School of Met-

teachers ended a marathon
bargaining session at 3:30
a.m. last Friday by reaching
agreement on a new con-
tract.
The re-opening of school,
which had originally been
delayed from Sept. 8 to Sept.
10, was switched to Monday
as the teachers used Friday
as a preparation day.

from organizations which
publish literature for the
sole purpose of inciting ra-
cial hatred? Must public lib-
raries contribute to the fi-
nancial survival of such in-
famous and notorious
groups as the Liberty Lobby
and the Historical Review
Press?
Are these works with
their mendacious theses
written behind "facades of
scholarship" essential to the
legitimate study of the
Nazi's piecemeal destruc-
tion of the European Jewish
community?

Man's unhappiness, as I
construe, comes of his
greatness; it is because
there is an infinite in him,
