Bayard Rustin and His Christian Associates
Demand Probe of Anti-Semitism in the Media

Bayard Rustin, president
of the A. Philip Randolph
Institute, writing to the
New York Times on behalf
of himself and a group of
non-Jewish associates who
studied the situation in
Lebanon, demanded a pro-
bing of the manner in which
Israel was maligned in the
media in news coverage
about the war.
Rustin, in a letter pub-
lished in the New York
Times, Sept. 10, stated:
"I am writing in behalf of
a group of disparate people,
from several religious faiths
and. representing different
constituencies, who visited
Israel and Lebanon to-
gether, having returned on
Aug. 23.
"We spent two days in
southern Lebanon, in-
cluding east Beirut, with
the cooperation of the Is-
raeli government, which

should be made known as
soon as possible.
"First, we agree that the
coverage of Israel's military
advance into Lebanon was
inaccurate and unfair and
did not depict what actually
happened.
"Among other cities, we
visited Tyre, Sidon and
Nabatiye, which had been
reported as virtually de-
stroyed. We found them vi-
tal, populated and thriving,
with their own civilian con-
trol, and, in every way we
could see, ready and capable
of picking up their lives.
"The energy and re-
cuperative power of the
Lebanese people were strik-
ing.
"Sidon was the most
damaged of these three
cities, but even there only
isolated sections of the main
street — the road to Beirut

— showed heavy damage.
The side streets and most of
the main thoroughfare were
relatively untouched. So it
was clear to us that the
damage reported by the
U.S. media had been grossly
exaggerated.
"The final, perhaps
most important point we
wish to convey is the
widespread loathing of
the Lebanese people for
the PLO. We spoke to do-
zens, stopped at random
on the streets. All were
willing, indeed eager, to
talk with Americans, and
all damned the PLO.
"The PLO had seized a
number of cities during its
seven-year reign of terror in
the area. All law there was
PLO law; all justice PLO
justice.
"And we heard stories of
murder, rape, pillage, in-
timidation, sacrilege and
what have you — from
Maronite Christians and
from Shi'a Muslims alike.
One has only to visit the
Christian cities of Damour
or Sichiyah, or Shi'a
Nabatiye to be convinced.
"Those who traveled with
me were the Rev. Carl E.
Flemister, executive minis-
ter of the American Baptist
Churches of Metropolitan
New York; Thomas Y.
Hobart Jr., president of
New York State United
Teachers; John E. Nikas,

former president of the
Helenic-American
Neighborhood Action
