TEL AVIV (JTA) — Is-
raeli troops, who has been
withdrawn from the im-
mediate area of Beirut after
the departure of Syrian and
PLO forces in west Beirut,
returned to the Lebanese
capital in force Tuesday
night, after the assassina-
tion of President-elect
Bashir Gemayel became
known.
According to the army
spokesman the Israelis
entered west Beirut "to pre-
vent any possible serious
incidents and to ensure
quiet."
The statement added that
"the IDF forces entry was
accomplished without inci-

BASHIR GEMAYEL
But by mid-morning on
Wednesday, Beirut re-
ports said that left-wing
forces and remnants of
the PLO left behind in Be-
irut, usually in civilian
clothing, had opened fire
on the Israelis and stiff
fighting was reported.
The shooting was said to
include tank, bazooka, roc-
ket and machinegun fire.
According to Beirut re-
ports, some Israeli troops
were landed by large troop-
transport aircraft at Beirut
International Airport.
These and other Israeli
forces pushed into west Be-
irut along three axes.
The Israelis were de-
scribed as having reached
areas of Beirut they had till
now been kept away from,
including the embassy and
main hotel sectors, and in-
cluding areas which until
last month had housed the
headquarters of the Fatah
and other PLO organiza-
tions.
While the ground
forces were advancing
through the city, Israeli
air force planes made low
passes over the city but
did not launch any at-
tacks.
The barricades between
east and west Beirut, down
last week for the first time
in years, were again going
up Wednesday as tension
rose between right wing and
Christian elements and lef-
tist and Moslem areas and
militia groups.
With the renewed tension
in Beirut, Israeli and Syrian
forces also stepped up their
alerts in the central and
eastern sectors of the Leba-
non front, especially in the
Bekaa Valley.
In south Lebanon, cur-
fews were imposed on the
town of Sidon and in vil-
lages throughout the area.
Road traffic was halted
through the south, as well
as on the main Beirut-to-
Damascus highway.
The curfew observa-
tion in the south was as-
sisted by Major Saad
Haddad's militiamen.
Haddad himself ex-
pressed grave concern at the
assassination of Gemayel,
and said the attack had
been not only on Gemayel as
a person but also, and possi-
bly mainly, against Leba-
non as a whole and specially
its Christian population.
Inside Israel, Science and
Development Minister Prof.
Yuvan Neeman, of the
right-wing Tehiya Party,
said the murder of the
president-elect underlined
his call for permament Is-
raeli control of southern
.
Lebanon.
But opposition Labor
Party head Shimon Peres
predictably took the oppo-
site viewpoint. He queried
why Israeli troops had been
sent back into west Beirut
suggesting they should be
withdrawn immediately
and an international force
sent in if any guard forces
were needed to avoid civi
war in Lebanon again.
He said he thought the
Likud government had
erred in putting too much
trust in Bashir Gemayel
