In 1776, anything associ-
ated with the British
monarchy had a bad taste to
the American rebels. He-
brew, on the other hand,
was held in high regard by
the former colonists, who
viewed it as the mother of
all languages, the key to the
scriptures and the cor-
nerstone of a liberal educa-
tion.
They had named their
towns after those cited in
the Bible, such as Salem
and Bethlehem, and their
children were named after
biblical figures.
Until 1817, annual
commencement ad-
dresses at Harvard were
delivered in Hebrew, and
at Yale the language was
required for freshmen.
Many lower schools also
stressed Hebrew.
Several members of the
new Congress reportedly
urged that English be
banned altogether and re-
placed by Hebrew. Though
the idea never caught on,
Hebrew remained a re-
quired course at many
major American univer-
sities well into the 19th
Century.

What Makes Begin Tick: A Profile
Knesset. Like Ben-Gurion
he is a firm believer in a
presidential style of gov-
ernment.
Begin has become the
first Israeli leader to
achieve a peace agreement
with an Arab country.

JERUSALEM — It is five
years since Mr. Begin
crossed the floor of the
Knesset after 30 years in
opposition and took up the
mantles of premiership. But
to many people outside Is-
rael he remains an enigma.
Whereas many Jews
abroad are proud of the
forthright manner in which
Begin defends the interests
of Israel, some cringe at his
style. A Newsweek survey
last year of U.S. Jews found
that 53 percent thought
that Begin's policies were
hurting support for Israel
against 34 percent who did
not. The Jews rated the late
President Anwar Sadat of
Egypt to be higher as a
peacemaker than Begin. (A
Jerusalem poll during the
Lebanon war in June 1982
showed over 90 percent ap-
proval in Israel for Begin's
policies.)
If many foreign govern-
ments look to the day when
Begin is no longer prime
minister, the more impor-
tant matter of support for
him inside Israel has in-
creased. Elected in 1977 —
in an election which anti-
Beginists saw more as a pro-
test vote against Labor than
a vote for Likud — with 43
seats, the Likud improved
its position in the 1981 elec-
tions to 48 seats. And Is-
rael's invasion of Lebanon
has further appeared to
raise Begin's stature in Is-
rael.
Another Jerusalem
Post poll, conducted a
month after the initial in-
vasion, found that 51.5
percent of Israelis
thought that Begin was
the best prime minister.
His nearest rival as best
prime minister was Yit-
zhak Rabin with 12.7 per-
cent.
Begin in fact dominates
Israel's political scene and
one finds it hard to find any
other Israeli politician
capable of challenging him
today.
In terms of his personal-
ity, what others see as in-
flexibility he regards as a
commitment to a set of un-
shakeable principles. His
leadership derives from a
consistency of purpose, a
single minded determina-
tion, both a sense of mission
and an inner certainty of
being right, rather than
from intellectual stature.
He believes that he is
entrusted with the fate of
the "remnant" of the Jews
in the post-Holocaust era.
And to protect them he
practices a "never-again"
philosophy of taking any
necessary action against a
perceived enemy.
In a country where the
majority of the citizens
come from Arab lands
and favor a strong hand,
Begin speaks for the man
in the street, with the
Labor opposition ex-
pressing more educated
elements, many from
European backgrounds.
It is necessary to under-
stand Begin's background.
