Redemption Fee for Child

A Jewish father is re-
quired to redeem his first
born son, the first born of
the child's mother, by giv-
ing the redemption fee to a
Kohen (of the priestly fam-
ily of Aaron).
Basically, this is an out-
right commandment men-
tioned in the Bible (Num-
bers, Chap. 8). A variety of
reasons are offered to ex-
plain this requirement.
First, this stems from the
general requirement to
understand that everything
we achieve comes from the
Almighty. That is why it is
required to offer the first
fruits of the harvest, the
first born of certain ani-

when it comes to humans
the tradition did not want
us to actually relinquish
our children and so a
method of redemption
was set up so it would be
possible to redeem the
first born males.
Second, originally all first
born males were assigned to
duties in the holy temple.
They were the priests. La-
ter, the priestly family of
Aaron was substituted for
the first born in the holy
temple. This still did not ex-

redemption ceremony of the
first born males today re-
minds us of this saving

the Almighty for having
spared the first born at that
