New Electroplating Process
Developed in Technion Lab

By ELISSA ALLERHAND

TEL AVIV — A joint
project towards commercial
development of an indus-
trial aluminum electroplat-
ing method has been under-
taken by Tel Aviv Univer-
sity, Lockheed Missiles and
Space Company in Califor-
nia, Deutsch Electrochemi-
cal Industries, Israel, and
Tel Aviv University's
Ramot University
Authority for Applied Re-
search and Industrial De-
velopment Ltd.
The present protective
plating of steel for aircraft
and other industrial uses is
cadmium, which constitutes
an environmental hazard
and performs poorly at high
temperatures, and thus the
team of scientists is de-
veloping an aluminum plat-
ing which is both safe
environmentally and per-
forms well at high tempera-
tures.

Gileadi, dean of the
Raymond and Beverly Sac-
kler Faculty of Exact Sci-
ences, and Dr. Emanuel
Peled had in recent years,

of plating bath which could
make aluminum a practi-
cal, safer substitute for
cadmium plating, offering
the same corrosion-
protection, and better
abrasion-protection fea-
tures, without the
environmental hazards.
The aluminum plating will
withstand much higher
temperatures and will not
diffuse, as cadmium does,
into the underlying metal.

In continuation of the
finding of the Tel Aviv Uni-
versity Scientists, the same
method of plating was
tested, scaled up more than
a hundred times larger, at
Lockheed in Palo Alto,
Calif., in cooperation with
the university and the same
findings have been con-
firmed.

Potential applications in-
clude not only its primary
use as plating of high
strength steel and light
metal alloys in the aviation
industry, but also a wide
range of other industrial,
military and commercial
uses, among them plating of
silicone wafers in solar col-
lectors.
