World-Wide Audience Informed,
Entertained by Israel Radio

JERUSALEM — The
English external service of
Israel Radio is picked up by
shortwave listeners from
every corner of the world
and the programming pro-
vides a unique vehicle for a
clearer understanding of
the intricacies of the Jewish
state.
One of the most popular
shows is "Calling All Lis-
teners" (CAL), the weekly
mailbox program which airs
on Sundays. CAL is co-
hosted by Rosalyn Gelcer
and Yishai Eldar.
Ms. Gelcer, who is also a
news announcer, is rated as
the 11th most popular in-
ternational radio person by
the American-based Inter-
national Broadcasting
Services Ltd.
Most of the letters an-
swered on CAL are from the
United States, Great Brit-
ain and West Germany. But
listeners also write in from
Japan, Finland, the Nether-
lands and as far away as
Tristan da Cunha, an island
near the South Pole. And,
according to Ms. Gelcer,
most of the letters she and
Yishai get are from non-
Jews.
What do listeners want
to know? Well, they have
asked whether there is a
value added tax in Israel,
if there are golf courses in
the state, why Israel
celebrates the new year
in September or October
and not in January, and if
Israel has its own space
program. The subjects
raised are endless.
Two other popular pro-
grams air on Friday. Ep-
hraim Geffen hosts "Thank
Goodness It's Friday,"
which features an interview
or two on Jewish life, a
study of the portion of the
week from the Torah, and
possibly the latest news
from the Jewish world.
Idele Ross presents
"Shabat Shalom," where
she plays listeners' requests

and sends their greetings.
"Living Here," a Monday
program which reports on
immigrants living in Israel,
is also hosted by Ms. Ross.
Prior to each program,
listeners can hear the latest
news from Israel. In 1979,
the English news depart,
ment of Israel Radio was
judged by a panel of
shortwave listeners in the
U.S. as the "Best Source of
News About the Station's
Own Region."
Large numbers of let-
ters arrive at the English
Department following
the breaking of Middle
East news events which
have made world head-
lines. Comments on the
type of coverage that was
provided by the news de-
partment vary. However,
for the most part, listen-
ers have hailed the "ob-
jectivity" with which
controversial issues are
reported.
The transcription service
of Israel Radio also offers
programs in English that
can be acquired by local sta-
tions throughout the United
States, Great Britain,
Canada, Australia and New
Zealand. These programs
range from the weekly news
and feature close-up, "Israel
Magazine," to the "Israeli
Press Review" and the pro-
gram for Christians, "In
The Holy Land." These
broadcasts have been sub-
scribed to by a large number
of stations, including var-
ious national networks such
as Mutual Broadcasting in
the United States.
Some of Kol Yisrael's He-
brew broadcasts can be
heard on short wave as well.
Israel radio's broadcasts
abroad work on modest
budgets. Their success
speaks for itself in the re-
sponses of the listening pub-
lic all over the world, re-
sponses as numerous in
their quantity as they are
varied in their sources. This

2,000 Year Old Theater

is the satisfaction of the
people behind the broad-
casts and this is their singu-
lar contribution to the taks
of presenting Israel to the
world.

Shown is the Roman theater at Bet Shean in
northern Israel. Last year, archeologists discovered a
full amphitheater nearby. Plans are to combine the
two sites into a major antiquities park.

Call for Israel Liquidation

"The liquidation of Israel
is one of the means we adopt
to achieve unity and free-
dom in the Arab world. We
know that liberation is a
long-term goal, but I am
about to determine that, at
the end of this year, a demo-
cratic Palestinian state will

be established."
The above statement was
made by Hani Hassan,
political adviser to Yasir
Arafat, at a rally organized
by students at American
University in Beirut mark-
ing the 17th anniversary of
Fatah activity.
