Some Jewish legal sources forbid the sale of real estate in Israel to non- Jews. The Talmud traces this to the passage in the Bible (Deuteronomy 7:2) which is taken to mean that perma- nent ownership of Israel real estate by non-Jews is forbidden. The Mishna cites the law forbidding this practice (Aboda Zara 19b). Nachmanides explains that such a transaction would make it impossible to return the land to its origi- nal owner in the Jubilee Year — something which is required according to bibli- cal law. On the other hand, there were some authorities who claimed that the restriction to sell some real estate in Israel to non-Jews applied only to idol worshippers so that they would not lead the people to idol wor- ship (Exodus 23:33). One source indicates that this would therefore not apply to selling real es- tate to Moslems, who are considered monotheists. Under most opinions, if there is any restriction, it would only apply to a per- manent sale.
