PRAY FOR THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM

A MESSAGE FROM THE CONGREGATIONAL RABBIS OF DETROIT

> ,

As we approach Rosh Hashana, a time of self-evaluation,
we are mindful that wherever we live and whkever our
circumstances, all Jews are responsible for each other.
Never has that awesome responsibility been demonstrated
more dramatically than in recent days and months.

Fighting both an implacable foe and an often hostile and
distorted media, Israel has stood virtually isolated but for
the constant support of the Jewish People. In the
aftermath of the war in Lebanon, there is no rejoicing in the
homes of Israel. The tragic loss of life has been too
staggering, the tremendous costs of mending and
rebuilding too financially burdensome to dismiss-in talk of
3,
victory.
While we sorrow at the enormous toll of pain and
suffering involved on all sides in the war, we are thankful
that Israel's people on the northern border are at last free
from the attacks of PLO terrorists. We share the relief of
Israel's Lebanese neighbors, no longer held hostage in their
own land by their own brothers.
We pray that the New Year will bring with it a renewed
civil order and peace among.neighbors. But building a lasting
peace will be no easy task. Therefore, at this season of
reckoning, we, the congregational rabbis of metropolitan
Detroit, call upon every Jew to support to the very best of his
or her ability the special Israel Emergency Fund for Israel's
human needs.
Furthermore, we fervently urge increased commitment
to the Allied Jewish Campaign, for other pressures on the
Jewish People here and abroad have also increased. Jews
in the Soviet Union, in Ethiopia and elsewhere are in an
increasingly desperate situation. Fanatical anti-Semitism of
both the left and the right has soared dramatically, bringing
unease here and physical violence in Europe.
The economic hardship that has befallen many of our
families and the aged right here at home has meant greater
pressure on' our communal agencies supported by the
Campaign. New funds must be found to develop critically
needed new programs: to_guarantee a quality Jewish
education to every Jew, to meet the needs of Jewish
singles and others of our community.
For all these we urge your support.
May our prayers for the peace of Jerusalem and for the
Jewish People be matched by our resolve: that we will meet
the challenges before us with renewed strength. Be strong!
Be strong ! And let us strengthen one another!
