Maccabi World Union Will Sponsor
World-Wide Youth Sports Tournament
By HASKELL COHEN

The 41VIaccabi World
Union, long engaged in the
organization of the quad-
rennial Maccabia Games,
often referred to as the
Jewish ,Olympics, is under-
taking another sports pro-
gram of international
caliber that bears watching.
The headquarters of the
union has announced that
the organization will con-
duct an annual Interna-
tional Hanuka Youth Tour-
nament in which young
athletes from Jewish com-
munity centers, Maccabi
clubs and Jewish schools
are invited to participate.
The results of accom-
plishments of the various
games conducted all over
the world are to be sent to
the Maccabi World Union
headquarters in Ramat
Gan, Israel. Here, with the
use of computers, all the re-
sults will be tabulated and
the winners in each age
group will be determined.
sports tournament. This
year, the tournament will
take place Dec. 10-17. The
results from the various
entries must be received at
the union headquarters by
Jan. 21, 1983. The results
and names of the winners
then will be publicized and
released at the- Maccabi
World Union Plenary Ses-
sion which is scheduled for
Feb. 21, 1983.
The first, second and
third place athletes in each
event and each category
will be mailed gold, silver or
bronze medals, according to
their -respective finishes in
the competition. According
to a scale of achievement
that will be planned by a
board of youth sports spe
cialists, the outstanding
athlete of the entire
world-wide tournament will
be awarded a prize — a
scholarship enabling the
contestant to compete in a
program in Israel.
The results will then be
mailed or distributed to
the participating athletes
and their organizations
all over the world. By
using this computerized
method of running an in-
ternational sports event,
Jewish youths will be
able to compare their
achievements with those
of thousands of other
competitors every year.
The aim of the Maccabi
World Union is to run this
sort of program on an
annual basis during
Hanuka week.
Registration forms will be
circulated two months prior
to the tournament. These
forms will be addressed to
the participating organiza-
tions which will then or-
ganize, register and select
the athletes for the partici-
pation in the first ever,
