▪ THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 40 Friday, September 10, 1902 • • Investigation Reveals UPI Photograph Was Misleading NEW YORK (JTA) — United Press International has concluded, after an in- vestigation touched off by severe criticism, that a war-injured Lebanese child had not lost his arms, as had been claimed in a caption and photographs circulated internationally on Aug. 1 by the news agency. The photographs were also cir- culated by Associated Press. The picture of the al- legedly armless child was reportedly displayed on ttioR orp President Reagan's desk as a symbol of suffering in Lebanon. The photo por- trayed a nurse holding a baby girl swathed in ban- dages after both her arms had been blown off by an al- legedly misdirected Israeli bomb. The Israeli medical corps tracked down the infant and the nurse. It was learned that the child was a boy, Eli Massau, four months old, and not a girl, who was dis- charged from the hospital a 589-7135 Complete\ Carry-evilly — Restaurant • (Formerly Spiro's) 25920 GREENFIELD at liacall Oak Park 968-4060 OPEN MON.-SAT. 6 a.m. thru 9 p.m. CONEY ISLAND, : RESTAURAN T • BREAKFAST SPECIAL.R Mse.-Sat. 6-11 a.m. • LUNCH SPECIALS • DINNER SPECIALS Ropier Mae aod GOURMET COUNTERSIDE SPECIALS (Steak Diane, Caesar Salad, Veal Dishes, etc., etc., etc.) Your Hosts: GEORGE. & MARIA GOLEMAT1SA 4752 SOUTHFIELD RD 1 BLOCK $OUTH OF 10 MILE D. Fadi Mitri of UPI and two other news photographers took pictures of the child and the nurse at the French-run Hospital Dieu. Mitri, who wrote the cap- tion, said his information came from neighborhood residents and hospital offi- cials who had talked to the patients hurt in the attack on the apartment in which the Massau family lived. On Aug. 8, Israel issued a formal statement denounc- ing the photograph as "a gross distortion of facts and violation of basic ethics of journalism which caused Is- rael great damage in wide circles of public opinion.
