The report examined is-
sues facing Montreal Jewry
in the coming decade, in-
ANOTHER
cluding declining numbers,

especially young adults; in-
creasing numbers and prop-
ortions of the elderly; a
shrinking flow of funds for
the Montreal Jewish com-
munity, both from its mem-
bers and the government;
and the need for greater
cohesiveness among Jewish
community organizations.
The report said the
committee believes the
Montreal Jewish com-
munity can respond to
those stresses by more
broadly based participa-
tion in communal life;
greater access to Jewish
leadership positions;
stronger leaders; and in-
creased "community
discipline in fund-
raising, community
planning, allocations of
funds and political re-
presentation."
The report presented
some specifics on the cur-
rent demography of
Montreal Jewry. Some 20
percent are elderly. An
equal proportion are
Sephardim. About one-
Aff
third of Montreal's young
Jews are leaving each year.
Between 750 and 1,000
Jewish children were born
in Montreal in 1981. Six
p
percent of Montreal Jewish
family units are headed by
single parents.
Fig
The forecast of the report
for 1987 is that the elderly
Jews will represent from 27
to 37 percent of the commu-
nity, upwards of 25,000
Jews; and about 9,000
Montreal Jews will be 75
and older and hence more
likely to be at risk in terms
of need of services from the
community.

$22 million went to Israel,
eight percent to Canadian
national Jewish organiza-
tions and the rest to
Montreal's network of

The committee estimated
that another $7 million was
contributed separately by
Montreal Jews in 1981 to
Israel-based institutions,
mainly universities and
hospitals.
