The Best of Everything

IT'S QUITE A JUMP
from Barry's War Surplus
store on Grand River to the
highly-touted Quilted
Giraffe restaurant in New
York . . . But the 39-year-
old son of Irving and Lillian
Wine (Iry named the store
after Barry Wine) also went
from a corporate securities
lawyer on Wall Street to
chef-proprietor of Quilted
Giraffe on New York's Sec-
ond Ave.
Barry graduated from
University of Chicago Law
School . . . and gave up his
profession to be a culinary
expert, or "cook" as he calls
himself.
In 1970, Barry, wife Su-
san, and their two children
moved from New York City
to a little town 90 miles
north . . . He set up a law
practice and Susan opened
an art gallery.
It was their thinking that
the only way the art gallery
Would make it would be to
open a restaurant next door
where people could lunch -
then shop at the gallery ..
and so the Quilted Giraffe
was born in the little town of
New Paltz . . . with the
eatery's name coming from
some of the quilted artifacts
sold at the gallery.
At the beginning,
neither could do the
cooking chores, and
hired someone else to do
it . . . Over the course of
three years, however,
they discovered a fond-
ness for the restaurant
business . . . When the
chef had a day off, Barry
would cook.
In 1977, he gave up law
and 'became a full-time chef
. . . Susan quit her art gal-
lery and made all the pas-
tries . . . "We just plowed
ahead in a not too terribly
pressured atmosphere,"
Says Barry, "and grew with
the business."
He and Susan decided
they were ready to open a
place in New York City . .
In 1979, the new address of
Quilted Giraffe was 955
Second Ave. . . . garnering
much acclaim from culinary
experts and gourmets.
Their place seats only 60
. . . with a fixed price menu
. . . and is considered
among New York's finest.
ANOTHER CHUCK E.
Cheese's Pizza Time Thea-
ter has opened . . . on Nine
Mile, a couple blocks east of
Woodward in Ferndale ..
The 10th unit has Dolly
Dimples, King, the seven-
foot lion who takes off on
Elvis Presley, etc.
PEOPLE ASK, "What is
that new Celebrities place
we see on Northwestern and
12 Mile?"
It's the former Cafe Fior
. . . now redesigned by de-
signer Cary Greenberg into
a wide-open area seating
150 . . . plus a separate
cocktail section for 50 . . .
surrounding a large stage
and dance floor.
Neon lights are all about
. . . plus rust tablecloths,
floating candles on tables
and comfortable colors of
taupe and beige.
