Cooking Class in Oak Park

Danny Raskin's

LISTENING
POST

BEST KEPT SECRET
is the International Jewish
Sports Hall of Fame . . .
formed in 1979 with
athletes from the world over
. . . Initial year in Califor-
nia it was a national sports
hall of fame . . . Then be-
came international utiliz-
ing the complete third floor
of Wingate Institute, Tel
Aviv.
There are presently 18
enshrined in the Interna-
tional Sports Hall of Fame
. . . which was first learned
about by many at a dinner
meeting here to hopefully
form a Michigan Hall of
Fame for sports and dedi-
cated communal persons.
CALLING CARD of
Michael Kallen . . . reads,
"Jackie's Husband."
SY NEWMAN and Oak
Park are a combination . . .
He started a part-time
drafting and office supply
business in his basement,
1970, on Northfield Blvd. in
Oak Park . . . By 1972,
business expanded to full-
time when Sy opened a
small store on Nine Mile
and Republic in Oak Park
. . Then in 1974 to a much
larger spot on Coolidge and
Nine Mile . . . still in Oak
Park.
A major fire in 1976
caused him to relocate . . .
with what was supposed to
be temporary quarters at
Lincoln Shopping Center,
Oak Park . . . After 4 1/2
years, Sy moved to much
larger space . . . at Lincoln
Center . . . where his Sy
Draft continues to expand.
DARRYL PITT follows
in his dad's footsteps when
it comes to music . . . but
the only instrument his
talented fingers are on is a
camera.
The son of Dorothy and
ork leader Mack Pitt was of-
ficial photographer for
Montreux Detroit Jazz Fes-
tival . . . and recently re-
turned from Montreux,
Switzerland where he was
official photog of the
internationally-noted festi-
val there.
CONGRATS ... to Emily
Brown . . . on birthday
number 85 . . . Emily lives
at 5100 N.E. 2nd Ave.,
Miami, Fla. 33137 . . . to be
near her daughter, Carolyn
Green.
UNUSUAL BRIDAL
registry is that at Ilona Gal-
lery in Hunter Square, Or-
chard Lake Rd. and 14 Mile
. . . Instead of the usual
China, crystal, toaster, pop-
corn maker, etc., Hirshel
Levine's new brides love to
receive unusual hand-
crafted pieces.
Now at the gallery is Al-
lester Dillon's clay weaving,
which will be a regular fea-
ture at Ilona . . . The libra-
rian turned potter when she
was 50 years old, is a good
example of successful mid-
life transition . . . She has
been working with clay for
the past seven years . . .

and her works are ex-
tremely unusual.
MAIL DEPT. . . . "We
live in a subdivision on 14
Mile and Drake Rd. (West
Bloomfield Woods). We
have an association that
handles all maintenance
and legal problems for the
sub. But we also have many
social activities for the chil-
dren that ensure safety (be-
ing with their parents) and
fun. We take turns having
these different parties
through the year.
"Recently, a pool party
was held at the home of
Stuart and Dena Fishman.
It was an all-day party, in-
cluding swimming, games
and a bbq for 18 families in
the sub. Later that evening,
the adults returned for
`dessert and drinks' to wind
up the day.
"Last fall, a Halloween
party was held at the home
of Ron and Judy Ossipove,
and once again this fall, Bill
and Diane Nevers will host
thier "Everyone Bring An
Hors d'Oeuvre" get-
together.
"We feel this is an alter-
native to a 'movie and
dinner' and a good way to
get to know your
neighbors."
Judy Ossipove
WHERE THEY ARE
. . . Chuck and Gerrie Fen-
ton, former localites, have
moved from Fort Meyers,
Fla. to Deerfield, Fla. on the
east coast near Boca Raton
. . . and would love friends
from here to call . . . (305)
426-1363.
AMERICAN SOCIETY
of Interior Designers and
National Home Fashions
League presents their
"Fabulous Finds" at Our
Warehouse, 19450 Grand
River at Outer Drive . . .
today 12 noon to 8 p.m.. . .
tomorrow and Sunday, 10
a.m. to 6 p.m.
AN INSTITUTION may
fade . •. . unless help ar-
rives . . . This is the fate of
Boy Scout Troop 23, whose
scoutmaster, Nate Trager,
has no one to help him . . .
Troop 23, now meeting at
Temple Beth El, was or-
ganized 55 years ago at the
old Hannah Schloss Bldg.
. . . and Nate has been
scoutmaster 53 of those
years . . . with some of De-
troit's finest personages
once members.
I'm sure that no former
member of Troop 23 wants
to see it fold . . . too much
excellent history . . . plus
the very fine work it still
does . . . should certainly
cause many to come to
Nate's assistance in seeing
that there will continue to
be a Troop 23.
