The meeting in San Jose was a follow-up to one President Monge had in June with representatives of ADL and the American Jewish Committee after it was announced that Costa Rica would return its em- bassy to Jerusalem. President Monge said at the time that his coun- try would welcome Americans as tourists not only because of its friendly relations to the United States, but also as a source of income. He indicated that Costa Rica was in sore economic straits, complicated by the fact that several Arab states had . broken con- tractual relations follow- ing the return of the em- bassy to Jerusalem.
