The Southfield Police and
Fire Civil Service Commis-
sion voted 2-1 this week to
uphold the firing of Jacob
Tewel, an Orthodox Jew,
who claimed he was fired
from the police force in Feb-
ruary because of anti-
Semitism.
The city charged that
Tewel was fired after five
months as a police officer
because he was downgraded
on daily observation reports
by field training officers.
A court appeal of the ril-
ing is expected.

Every man is, or hopes to
be, an idler.

WASHINGTON —
Newsweek magazine re-
ported this week that U.S.
Marines blocked a French
honor guard from escorting
PLO chief Yasir Arafat out
of west Beirut.
Newsweek said the
French ambassador, a gen-
eral and four armored cars
carrying French soldiers in
full dress uniform wanted to
accompany Arafat through
the Marine lines around the
port.
Marine commanders
deemed the escort political
and turned away the French
troops. French officials deny
the Newsweek report.
