HOLLYWOOD — "I was
received in Israel as a hero,"
Klaus Maria Brandauer,
star of the Academy-Award
winning Austro-Hungarian
picture "Mephisto," told
this columnist during our
meeting in Vienna recently.
"A thousand people
waved and shouted bravos
at the Ben Gurion Airport.
A performance of the
Habima in Tel Aviv was in-
terrupted when I was called
to the stage to receive the
acclaim of the audience."
The spontaneous
applause of the Hebrew
movie-goer to a film depict-
ing events that took place in
Germany half a century ago
surprised Brandauer and
his director, Istvan Szabo.
Gustav Gruendgens, the
Mephisto-like Berlin per-
former whose corrupt career
the picture exposes, is
hardly known in Israel. Yet,
the picture, which opened in
Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and
Haifa long before it was
shown in Hollywood, has
something to tell of univer-
sal value. And the amazing
portrayal by screen new-
comer Brandauer (Who is in
his mid-thirties and a lead-
ing actor at the Vienna
Burgtheater) triggered an
unheard-of response from
movie fans.
In Tel Aviv, reveals
Brandauer, it was not only
the cinema addict who took
such an interest in him and
his film but also the average

Power Plant's
Fallout Studied

LOS ANGELES (JTA) —
The Israeli government's
Environmental Protection
selected
Service has
KVB
Irvine-based
combustion-engineering
firm to solve an acid-
particle fallout problem at
the Eshkol electric power
plant in Ashdod.
KVB's Hal Taback of
Santa Ana will travel to
Ashdod to conduct the in-
vestigation. (Ashdod is also
the Jewish community of
Orange Country's sister city
through United Jewish
Welfare Fund's Project Re-
newal.)
Taback will assess and
propose methods to com-
bat the fallout that coats
ground objects with
layers of fine, corrosive
soot, frequently leading
to significant property
damage for area resi-
dents.
Taback is a nationally-
recognized energy and
environmental consultant
and a leader of the Orange
County Jewish community.

EEC to Seek
Compensation?

COPENHAGEN (JTA) —
The European Economic
Community is considering
the possibility of demand-
ing compensation from Is-
rael for damage to Euro-
pean diplomatic property
during Israel's shelling of
Beirut. A note to that effect
has reportedly been sent to
Jerusalem.

citizen who wanted to know
he felt about the world of
tomorrow. "They were more
interested in the future,"
comments the actor, "than
they were in the grim past."
