TEL AVIV — A rabbi's
wife, Zippora Sheinin of
Bnei Brak, cannot forget
the cruel slaughter carried
out by Arabs 53 years ago in
Hebron. She is 76 years old,
but she remembers well
that sad Sabbath in Hebron
when the Arab murderers
killed 68 Jews, including
yeshiva students, women
and children.

It was Thursday evening
when she came home from
Jerusalem. She could see in
the faces of the Arabs that
something was happening.
Hagana members arrived
quickly to protect the stu
dents at the. Slobodki
yeshiva.
However, Rabbi Slonim
did not heed the Hagana
warnings and asked them to
leave. He told them: "We
are with the Arabs like
brothers. Leave us alone."
Mrs. Sheinin's
brother-in-law, who had
business connections
with Arabs, did not take
the warnings from one of
his Arab friends seri-
ously.
Friday morning, when
her sister had returned from
the Hebron market, Mrs.
Sheinin noticed that the
Arabs had taken an un-
friendly attitude. The secre-
tary of the yeshiva,
Wilenski, came with an
Arab policeman who asked
him to send a. cable to
Jerusalem. He said that a
yeshiva student had been
murdered.
On Friday morning the
slaughter started. The
Arabs
_ screamed, "Kill the

Jews" and she-saw from her
window how Arabs holding
iron rods in their hands
were approaching her
house. Her brother-in-law
took all the children into a
small room near the
kitchen. Her 22-year-old
sister Nahama and her hus-
band Shlomo Unger hid
their five-week-old baby in
a laundry basket.
Wild shouts could be
heard from the upper
floor, where the Arab's -
killed three yeshiva stu-
dents and Rabbi Slonim.
His wife hid in the toilet
and remained alive.
The Arabs broke down
the door of the Sheinin
apartment. The brother-in-
law tried to hold them back
but they wounded him seri-
ously and murdered the
baker who was with him.
The baker's wife hid but is
an invalid to this day. The
rabbi's wife saved the child
of her sister and one child of
the baker.
When the murderers ap-
proached the laundry bas-
ket, she nearly fainted. The
Arabs stuck knives into the
basket but missed the baby.
When the murderers left,
an old Arab neighbor and
others came in and called
for a doctor. They suggested
that Mrs. Sheinin should
live with Arab neighbors
until the situation calmed.
The Arabs wept when they
saw the murdered Jews.
Mrs. Sheinin said she
was too frightened to
look in the laundry bas-
ket. But the baby today is
a grandmother with a
small scar under her eye
as a memento from the
slaughter in Hebron.
Mrs. Sheinin said that
when the Arab doctor ar-
rived, he found her sister
dead. Her head was
smashed by hammers. Her
brother-in-law died on the
way to the hospital.
When Mrs. Sheinin saw
the body of her sister and
her wounded brother-in-law
carried out. she fainted.
When she finally came to
she ran to the roof and
wanted to jump to her
death. A yeshiva student
ran after her and saved her.
When she recovered she
asked the yeshiva student
to bring her the two chil-
dren. She vowed to nurse
the orphans and not to
marry. But fate turned out
otherwise. The yeshiva stu-
dent who brought her the
two children, Rabbi
Menahem Mendel Sheinin,
married her and they built
their new life in Bnei Brak.
He became associated with
the Agudat Yisrael school
and a yeshiva in Rehovot
and died four years ago.
The two orphans raised
by Mrs. Sheinin now have
children and grandchildren
of. their own.
Mrs. Sheinin completed
her studies at • the Hebrew
University and became di-
rector of an institute for
mute and paralyzed chil-
dren. After the Six-Day War
she visited Hebron again
and the ill-fated house. She
also visited the old Arab
who called the doctor.
