booths, dark wood and mir-
rors.
The dining fare is Can-
tonese, Szechuan and Man-
darin . . with Harold doing
most of the cooking . . . and
preparing dishes that can-
not be found anywhere else
. . . like Phoenix Nest,
shredded potato with mix-
tures of seafood and vegeta-
bles or chicken and vegeta-
bles (Szechuan, spiced or
unspiced) . . . Stuffed Pep-
per, long pepper stuffed
with shrimp, scallops, etc.
(Mandarin, spicy or mild)
. . . Stir-Fried Shrimp, a
genuine Cantonese dish,
with bird's nest sauce (like
wine sauce over meat).
Bird's nest sauce in-
cludes egg white, ginger,
white scallion ... and has
nothing to do with a real
bird's nest!
Harold also has a dish
called Ying Yang Fried
Rice, stir-fried chicken with
a cream sauce over fried rice
on one side . . . and scallops
over fried rice on another,
making it look like red and
white portions of fried rice.
Even his sizzling beef is
different . . . The steak is
marinated 20 minutes, top-
ped with white onions and
Mandarin sauce . . . The
Silver Needle Noodles come
with choice of meat and
mixed vegatables.
Before moving to Lincoln
Center, he had opened King
Lim's on 9 Mile in 1972 .. .
It had been an old restau-
rant owned by his uncle,
called King Lim, for 12
years . . . Before that it was
the Chiam Chinese Restau-
rant.
Many people think the
present ownership, Fung
Lim on 9 Mile is related to
Harold ... There is abso-
lutely no relationship.
Harold Horn also has a
second King Lim's, opened
41/2 years ago on Auburn Rd.
between Adams and Squir-
rel in Auburn . . . conven
ient to the Silverdome and
Meadow Brook.
RED DEVIL Restaurant
on Fenkell and Greenfield
continues to be a "sleeper"
Italian restaurant that
more and more people are
beginning to rediscover.
An attendant watches the
cars as they are parked in
the ample lot, next to Red
Devil . . . and politely opens
the door for folks to enter.
Things have changed
since Yahia Mawari took
over about 3'/2 years ago ..
for the better . . . No more
booths on the sides . . . now
open-table dining with a
full cocktail bar.
One of the waitresses, a
real good one, Helen
Romaine, has been there
over 30 years ... just a
couple of years after
Jack and Rose Bas-
sonetti opened the Red
Devil . . . Unlike many
waitresses of today,
Helen can boast of hav-
ing few peers better than
her as she methodically
serves tables large or
small without any confu-
sion ... and with polite
personable efficiency.

Helen had been at Kings-
ley Inn 17 years before corn-
ing to Red Devil, so it would
make almost 50 years as a
waitress . . . That's what
you call experienced experi-
ence!
When Jack and Rose sold
it to Vince Bassonetti,
Helen continued to see
people from all walks of life
come to Red Devil . . . and to
this day, Rose's sister,
Theresa Bassonetti Wilson,
is one of the persons making
those great round pizzas
everybody raves about.
Robbie Valentine prob-
ably holds a record . . . being
a busperson 30 years . . . of
her own choosing.
My son Scott was in

town from Texas, where
he is a marketing major
at University of Texas in
Austin ... and at 21 years
old still remembers the
