James Scheuer (D-NY) said, "This too shall pass." He said that the fruits of Israel's accom- plishment in Lebanon and the enormity of what Israel achieved will very soon be- come clear. JERUSALEM (JTA) — Two American Con- gressmen met last week with Premier Menahem Begin, and afterwards ex- pressed support for Israel's military operation in Leba- non. Rep. Mario Biaggi (D-NY) expressed confi- dence that Israel's action would not reduce Congres- rReaders Forum) Materials submitted to the Readers Forum must be brief. This leaves those senior citizens who still reside in Detroit and do not drive, unable to get to the Jewish Center on Drake Road. I have again paid for my membership but cannot use the swimming pool. I am positive that money gets squandered somewhere that could be used to main- tain the bus service. The new Fall Program Catalogue of the Jewish Center contains the infor- mation that the buses will be running where in fact they will not. The informa- tion is false and msileading. Much to my surprise I did not wit- ness any wanton destruc- tion such as I had expected on having read newspaper and magazine accounts. We visited the Beaufort Castle. Below the castle were former Lebanese homes and mansions that had been confiscated by the PLO. Fields of tobacco were seen, children were on the streets playing. Pointed out to us were numerous caches of weaponry where thousands of tons of armaments were stored in mountain caves, school basements, hospital rooms as well as other pub- lic buildings. In both Nabatiyeh and Marjayoun one saw the pockmarks of much shooting but in both cities life had returned to a normalcy unknown for many years. We were told by the people when the PLO entered a city, they im- mediately killed several thousand people as a warning that anyone who gave them trouble would get the same treatment. Lebanese women were raped by the PLO, and the men were abused in other ways. The PLO pillaged and took what it wanted. The Syrians also abused the people although they tried to keep the PLO in check in regard to the Lebanese. As we approached Marjayoun, we saw on the hillside a ghost city where all the inhabitants had left and had not yet returned due to harassment, murder and abuse from the PLO. The southern Bekaa Valley that we saw was at long last peaceful and once again children could be seen out- side playing without fear of what the next day would bring.
