▪ Reviewer Scores Malamud's 'God's Grace' By ARNOLD AGES Prof., University of Toronto Malamud, Bernard author of such unique novels as "The Assistant," "The Natural" and "The Fixer," has decided to inno- vate in his latest creative ef- fort, "God's Grace" (Farrar, Straus & Giroux). He has invented, for want of abet- ter term, science fiction with a Yiddish accent. After reading his current story readers will wish that Malamud had remained within the old traditional genres. He gives the impression in this latest chronicle that Charleton Heston and "The Planet of the Apes" should be re-cast in a Jewish idiom. rostror —11 I I FREE. WASHINGTON (JTA) — The resignation last week of Rep. Frederick Richmond (D-NY) brings the number of Jews in the House of Representatives down to 25. Richmond resigned after pleading guilty to evading nearly $50,000 in income tax payments, marijuana possession and illegally paying $7,420 to a Navy employe who helped obtain a business for the Brooklyn Navy yard. Richmond was first elected to Congress in 1974 and served a Brooklyn dis- trict that while largely GO to S Restaurant (Formerly Spiro's) 25920 GREENFIELD at Lincoln Oak Park 968-4060 OPEN MON.-SAT. 1 6 a.m. thru 9 p.m. • BREAKFAST SPECIAL 99c Men.-Sat. 6-11 a.m. • LUNCH SPECIALS • DINNER SPECIALS Regular Menu and \ GOURMET COUNTERSUE SPECIALS (Steak Diane, Caesar Salad, Veal Dishes, etc., etc., etc.) Your Hosts: GEORGE & MARIA GOLEMATIS BAGLE BASKET'S SUPERB TUNA SALAD SERVED ON A BED OF LETTUCE WITH FRESH VEGETABLE GARNI REG. The issue of that union, a young female, be- comes the object of much jealousy and hatred among the chinipanzees and other creatures who proceed to revolt against Cohn's hegemony. Predictably, the saintly Cohn becomes a sacrifice to the rapaciousness of the be- ings whom he has been try- ing so selfishly to tutor. There is no doubt that the critics will see in Malamud's latest work a series of marvellous mythic images. It will be called a metaphor ofman in modern society. Fashionable obser- vers will see in it existential values with all kinds of bi- blical resonances. What it is really, how- ever; is a grotesque carica- ture of the sancta of life, of Jewish history and religion. He arrives on a desert is- land with a talented chim- panzee (who has also been saved on the research ves- sel) whose vocal chords have been altered to permit him to speak. Cohn and Buzz soon dis- cover that they have other primate neighbors on the is-, land; Cohn sets out to instruct them in language and the other amenities of civilization. Cohn is no Robinson Crusoe. Lacking the practical skills that might be of some use on the is- land, Cohn pours his energies into nation- building utilizing the leadership qualities of a Moses, the interpretive skills of a Hillel and the pedagogical distinctions of an Akiba.
