Rickover Lauds Israel Following His Ten-Day Visit Discussion, even if stormy, often winnows truth from error — a good NEW YORK — "Israel must be diligent not to allow the material prosperity that may accompany peace to weaken the nation's inter- nal fiber," declared Admiral Hyman Rickover, father of the nuclear submarine, upon his return to Washing- ton last week from a 10-day visit to Israel and Lebanon. Admiral Rickover traveled to Israel as a guest of Herut - U.S.A. While in Israel, Rickover met with Menahem Begin, Defense Minister Ariel Sharon, senior officers of the Israel Defense Forces and held discussions with members of the Herut movement. He toured Israel's nu- clear facility at Nahal Sorek, and in southern Lebanon met with Chris- tian leaders and toured Beaufort Castle. Rickover had a five-hour meeting with General Is- rael Tal, former commander of the Israel Armored Corps and originator of the Mer- kava tank. He also visited settlements on the Golan Heights, met with senior fa- culty at the Weizmann In- stitute for Science and vis- ited the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial. Before leaving Israel, Admiral Rickover released a statement which said, inter alia: "I am proud of my Jewish heritage and regret that my mother Rachel, and my father Abraham, who im- migrated with me at age 6 years from Makov, Poland to the United States, could not share with me this dream of a Jewish state .. . My visit made me appreciate the vast amount of human labor involved in clear- ing a land literally covered with rocks. "I am also impressed with the steps taken by the gov- ernment to improve the education of Israeli stu- dents. This pleases me be- cause all my career I have stressed the importance of educating a country's youth for a country's future. The Jewish mentality of stres- sing education was evi- denced when I visited the Weitzmann Institute and discussed the work in pro- gress there .. . "And finally, I must com- pliment the state of Israel for having constantly borne in mind the injunction of the Talmud 'make the desert bloom.' I know of no other case in history where a people has accomplished so much."
