This is one of a series of developments resulting from the RP research pro- gram in the Department of Ophthalmology, where the various medical and technological skills of sev- eral teams are cooperating in an intensive program to learn the causes of and ways to control this complex genetic disease. Retinitis pigmentosa is the most frequent cause of hereditary blindness, which starts with young people in their teens and peaks in their 20s_and 30s. No treat- ment is known for the dis- ease, in which an excess of pigment is found dispersed in the retina. The purpose of the spe- cially constructed contact lenses is to slow down the deterioration of the retina by reducing the amount of light entering the eye, and to eliminate the dangerous wave lengths of light. The lenses are currently under- going evaluation. One team is growing retinal pigment epithelium cells from ani- mals and looking for the fac- tors that influence the metabolism of these cells. Only a few laboratories in the world are doing this type of research. Another department team is studying the biochemistry of Vitamin A in the pigment epithelium cells of the retina and work- ing on the effect of different wave lengths of light on healthy and diseased retinas as well as on the ef- fect of Vitamin A.
