JEWISH 'NEWS Ida Spear, 75 Ida Spear, who amassed 41,000 volunteer hours at Sinai Hospital, died Aug 23 at age 75. Born in Russia, Mrs. Spear lived 70 years in De- troit. She was a life member of Jewish Home for Aged and Children's Hospital. She also held membership in Hadassah, League of Jewish Women's Organiza- tions, Louis Marshall Chap- ter of Bnai Brith, Primrose Benevolent Club, Hebrew Benevolent Society, Women's American ORT, Jewish National Fund and haare Zedek Hospital She began her volunteer service at Sinai in 1959. She was a member of the Sinai Hospital Guild since 1958, and a life member since 1976. She is survived by a son, Dr. Victor of Rockford, Ill.; a daughter, Mrs. Gladys Sampson; four grandchildren and one- great-granddaughter. Clara Roman Clara Roman, an original member of the Jewish Folk Chorus, died Aug. 20 at age 82. Born in Russia, Mrs. Roman lived 40 years in De- troit. She was a member of Hadassah and was active in tasks on behalf of the Jewish National Fund. She leaves nieces and nephews. James Kahn, Publisher, 74 BOSTON (JTA) — James Kahn, publisher of the Jewish Times of Brookline, died Aug. 11. He was 74. Mr. Kahn was born in Worcester, Mass., and had resided in the Boston area for many years. A graduate of Boston University School of Business Management, Mr. Kahn was a salesman of advertising, and as such he represented many news- papers in Massachusetts. More than two decades ago Mr. Kahn established the Jewish Times as an al- ternative voice of the Jewish community in the Metropolitan area. Mr. Kahn was a member of Temple Ohabei Shalom, Brookline; Bnai Brith, the Zionist Organization of America, the Men's Asso- ciation of the Hebrew Re- habilitation Center for the Aged, and the Tub Thum- pers, a fraternal organiza- tion of persons affiliated with the advertising busi- ness.
