TEL AVIV — Hungarian
Colonel Imre Rewicky dur-
ing World War II saved lives
of 30,000 Jews. His son and
daughter-in-law are now
visiting Israel.
The pair were, invited to
Israel by a group of Hunga-
rian Jews who were saved
by the colonel from being
deported to Auschwitz. Col.
Rewicky was at the time the
commander of Nadevaya
(today Boyorade) in Trans-
ylvania, Romania. He was
also in charge of mobilizing
Hungarian Jews for work
on the Russian front.
Col. Rewicky tried var-
ious ways to avoid sending
Jews to the front, knowing
the fate expecting them
there. He sent part of them_
to agricultural work and
others to build roads and re-
pair railway lines in the
Carpatian Mountains. Sick
and weak Jews were
exempted by him from
work.
In 1944, he was ordered
to send Jews to Au-
schwitz, but he trans-
ferred them to work
camps. According to the

details collected by the
Romanian "Yad Vas-
hem," he saved the lives
of 30,000 Jews. He even
filled wagons with
stones, iron and wood in
order to create the im-
pression that they were
full of Jews on their way
tro Auschwitz.
After the war, his
humane deeds were not rec-
ognized by the Communist
regime in Hungary. He was
employed as a laborer in a
coal mining camp near
Budapest.
In 1949, when an Israeli
embassy was established in
Budapest, Ambassador
Shmuel Bentzur tried to
give him financial aid.
Hungarian Jews whose
lives he saved also sent
money.
Col. Rewicky died 20
years ago. He did not live to
receive a reward from Yad
Vashem in Jerusalem for
his humane work. His
widow was invested with
the distinction by former Is-
raeli Charge d'Affaires in
Budapest David Giladi.
During the ceremony,
in which the son of the
colonel took part, the
widow expressed her
sorrow that her husband
had not lived to receive
the honor himself. She
and her son said they
were proud of what Re-
wicky had done for the
Hungarian Jews.
Rewicky was a fanatic
humanitarian. He was the
son of a Hungarian writer
and offspring from an aris-
tocratic family. Among
those saved by him are the
former Mayor of Safed Ab-
raham Cohen and his
brother. They accompanied
the younger Rewickys dur-
ing
Is-
rael and also took them to
the street in Safed bearing
the name of Col. Imre Re-
wacky.
