Begin Greets Returned Israeli POWs

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Premier Menahem Begin
met with two POWs, Air
Force pilot Aharon Achiaz,
who was held priSoner by
PLO forces after he bailed
out of his plane which
crashed near the PLO
stronghold at Beaufort Cas-
tle in the early days of the
war in Lebanon, and Ron
Harush, who was kidnap-
ped in Beirut last week and
held prisoner for three days.
Both men were released
under the evacuation
agreement worked out by
U.S. special envoy Philip
Habib.
The returning POWs
_thanked Begin for the gov-
ernment's efforts to release

them and said they had
been fearful, during their
imprisonment, that the ter-
rorists might smuggle them
out of Lebanon.

Begin told Achiaz and
Harush that the ter-
rorists tried to get Israel
to release terrorists from
prisons in Israel in re
turn for releasing the two
Israelis. However, the
premier said, "we are de-
termined not to give in,
and told them there
would be no evacuation
before you were re-

leased."

The Israel Cabinet ap-
proved the evacuation
agreement only after it re-
ceived assurances that the
terrorists would release
Achiaz and Harush.

Victory It Is Forbidden

By MAURICE CROLL, M.D.

Which way to turn?
To sit still in their homes
And bomb shelters
And let the deadly shells
Rain in
Without a stop
And to merely accept, passively,
A silent, lesser holocaust
By the PLO
More Jews to be killed
In their own land
And
Not to raise a voice
In protest
While their loved ones, families,
Are being laughtered
Before
Their very own eyes.

This - the accepted picture -
The world would want to see.
What an outlook,
To wait silently to their death
Sitting death.

Turn the other cheek —
Both are already war-torn.
There are no more to turn.
When will this useless,
Ruthless, killing stop?

When the Israelis fight back
To defend themselves —
With powder and guns —
And make forays into
Territorial gangster land.
To gain freedom from the shells,
The UN promptly assembles
A cast of hate to
Quickly condemn. Everytime —
All join in unison -
There is enough hatred for all.

To defend oneself against
Repeated life-threatening actions
Is a basic rule
Of all the living.

Yet, each time the Israelis
Rise up with armor
To defend their small strip of land
"Eretz Yisrael,"
The world joins together
To immediately condemn.
Not one word is mentioned
Of the deaths, of the terrorism, caused
By the guerrillas based
In Lebanon.

Nor is there a word of protest
Against the Syrian army
Who came in on their own request
To protect the Lebanese.

Lord help the peaceful Lebanese
From all their protective friends.
The number they protected
Unto their death
Was in the range of 100,000
Over the seven years.

Still not a voice was raised
Around the world _
To help
The helpless, non-military,
Peace-loving peoples of Lebanon.

Twice complete victory was snatched
Away from Israel.
More recently in the Yom Kippur
War
When Israel was attacked
On their holiest day
Of the year
While they were
Fasting and praying
--- In their synagogues
For peace
And the right to live
In the return to their
Promised homeland.

After crossing the Nile,
And then completely surrounding
The Egyptian army from the rear,
At a fearful price of life
Israel was forced to make peace —
Just short of complete victory,
By the world military powers —
When the Egyptians were beaten, and
At the mercy of the Israeli
Armed forces.

Apparently, victory for the Israelis
Cound not be tolerated,
_A full-blown no win," permanent situation,
Decreed by the super powers.

What manner of so called
Fair-minded men and their
One-sided, blind justice
For the Israelis.
An atrocious no win," impossible
Situation.
Guaranteed with the slogan:
"Fear not - If you are about
To be beaten by the Israelis
We will step in and stop it."
And so they did.

What would happen if
The process were reversed?
It is too horrible to contemplate
The holocaust, once again,
On the hallowed soil of Israel.

Oil - Oil - Oil - speaks out,
Rather "shouts out,"
So very loud and extremely clear.
Oh, how the mighty dollar
Doth twist the minds of men.
The words of oil are dark —
Forboding —
But the black gold
Flows out across the lands
And actually covers the ground
Quite forcibly.

The death of even one
Innocent Lebanese
Is a mark upon our soul.
No matter - Christian or Moslem -
An absolute catastrophe.

In all wars civilians always
Are the most injured,
Their loved ones go out
To meet mutilation and death
While they stay home to hide,
If possible, from the bombs
Raining down from the sky.

The Jews are helping the Christians.
What a strange headline!
Is this really believable?
Can this be possible,
After so many histories
Of deathful persecutions?

Although the Israelis now have
Their promised land,
After three thousand wandering
Years,
The holocaust continues
As the world looks on
And condemns them,
Because the Israelis chose
To defend their land
And their mode of living
Against a sworn, brutal
Terrorist sneak-attacking
Enemy
Who has publicly proclaimed,
Time and time again.
In a rather large voice,
"We will drive the Israelis
Into the sea.
"We do not recognize Israel
As a state or a country."

What God has given us -
In His promise - the Land of Israel -
They have vowed
To take away - by death

It shall never be!
It cannot be!

P.S.: When Israel is shelled and

Their people killed by terrorists —
The PLO — it is apparently quite
Acceptable. No protest is made
By the onlooking people of the world
But
When Israel decides to defend themselves
And destroy the military power of
These gangsters who have proclaimed
A wish to annihilate all
The Israelis, the world looks on
And immediately condemns Israel.
For the Israelis to defend themselves
and win, is not acceptable.
It is sad to see the Semitic
" World into such an uproar of killing.
I wonder why Justice is portrayed
As having both eyes covered by a
Blindfold.

Elie Wiesel, writing in The Jewish News, wrote
after the Six-Day War that the image of the Jew has
changed. "The Jew no longer is on his knees. The
victim suddenly became the victor and this the world
was not prepared to accept." "A Jew triumphant over
death," wrote Wiesel, "was an intolerable thought."
