Abraham Shiffman made his millions in real estate and manufacturing. He spent them aiding scores of causes, including many universities. Tributes to his memory, therefore, include messages from Wayne State Univer- sity, Hebrew University and Brandeis University of- ficials, in addition to a score from many local and na- tional movements, in this country, on a nationalbasis, this city, state and _Israel. Mr. Shiffman, who died Aug. 16 at age 91, pur- chased the American Car and Foundry Co. in 1948 and used the income from his business to fund a charitable foundation bear- ing his name. Among the institutions which he benefited are: Brandeis University of which he was a founder and whose - humanities cent e r bears his name; the medical library at Wayne State University's medical school; Sinai Hospital's Shiffman Clinic; and a nursery and comprehensive high school in Israel. Children's Hospital, Mer- rill - Palmer Institute, the Franklin Wright Settle- ment and the Adult Service Center also have benefited from the Shiffman Founda- tion. Mr. Shiffman was a member of the boards of Men's ORT, Sinai Hospital, Brandeis University and United Foundation. ABRAHAM SHIFFMAN Leonard N. Simons asso- ciated with Mr. Shiffman as an adviser in his philan- thropic efforts and that capacity continued for nearly half a century. "His was the first large gift to Wayne State Uni- versity for the WSU Med- ical Library, in the amount of $500,000," Si- mons said. It was in memory of his first wife, Vera Parshall Shiffman. Simons recalled that Mr. Shiffman gave another half million dollars to Sinai Hospital for the transfer to it of the North End Clinic. In his many charitable deeds he had the encouragement of impor- tant people, including Mrs. Edsel Ford, who encouraged his gifts to the Merrill - Palmer Institute. A high school and a nursery school in Israel, and generous gifts to the Garden for Center Senior Hebrew University were included in Shiffman's many means of aiding Is- raeli causes, Simons said. A half million dollar gift to Brandeis University and continuing support for the Jewish-sponsored univer- sity are also accredited to Shiffman by Simons. "He told me at the outset it was his aim to give a mil- lion a year for important causes, and his charities ex- ceeded $5,000,000," Simons said. Rosh Hashana Reader Available NEW YORK — Rabbi Eliezer Zisya Portugal, leader of the Skullener sect of Hasidic Jews, died Wed- nesday in New 'York. He was 86. Rabbi Portugal, who was born in Romania, immig- rated to the United States in 1960. He founded some 30 institutions in Israel to care for the Jews of the Soviet Union and other Eastern European countries.
