ST. LOUIS — Resear-
chers at the National Insti-
tute of Health are teaming
with those at Washington
University in St. Louis to
unravel the mystery of
Gaucher's disease.
Discovered by a French
medical student. 100 years
ago, Jewish hereditary dis-
ease causes sore joints,
weak and brittle bones and
a large abdomen. Rapid
progress in treatment and
in basic bone research is
lending new hope that one
day the disease will be un-
derstood and successfully
treated.
Although rare among the
general population, as
many as 1 in 12 Eastern
European Jews are thought
to carry the abnormal, re-
cessive Gaucher gene.
When paired with a normal
gene, the disease is blocked.
But when two carriers have
children, about one in four

of the siblings inherit a con-
dition in which the body
lacks an anzyme necessary
for breaking down complex
fats in the blood.
"What we're trying to
figure out," says Wash-
ington University's Ar-
nold Kahn, "is how the
accumulation of these
fats results in bone dis-
ease. That's the major
stumbling block."
Dr. Kahn, a professor of
biomedical science in the
school of dental medicine,
and Dr. Steven Teitelbaum,
a professor of pathology in
the school of medicine, are
trying to determine the
exact nature of bone lesions
caused by the illness. Last
year they teamed up with
an NIH research group
headed by Dr. John Bar-
ranger to mount a full-scale
campaign aimed at defining
the mechanisms underlying
the bone abnormalities
associated with Gaucher's
disease.
At NIH's clinical center
in Bethesda, Md., more than
400 Gaucher's patients
have been seen in the past
eight years. According to
Dr. Barranger, chief of the
clinical investigations and
therapeutic section of the
development and metabolic
neurology branch, there are
an, estimated 20,000 to
30,000 people with the dis-
ease in the United States.
Although symptoms can
appear at any age, the dis-
ease most commonly strikes
in the middle to late teenage
years. Infants born with it
may suffer from severe
mental retardation.
Although imperfect,
blood cell tests can deter-
mine carriers of the defec-
tive gene, according to Dr.
Barranger. Doctors can also
tell whether a fetus is af-
fected through amniocen-
tesis, a surgical procedure
in which fruidis withdrawn
from the mother's amniotic
sac.
