The extent to which cen- sorship is increasingly al- tering school systems is out- lined by Edward B. Jenkin- son in "Censors in the Classroom," a new release from Avon Books. The volume is based on 10 years of investigation into the efforts of various groups to screen classroom mate- rials and ban books. Docu- menting hundreds of cases, Jenkinson shows how pri- vate censorship groups are gaining unprecedented influence, 25 years after the initial controversy sparked by J.D. Salinger's "Catcher in the Rye." In a discussion of the Is- land Trees (N.Y.) School District case, the author al- ludes to the effort by the American Jewish Commit- tee in fighting censorship in the schools. "Five students in the Is- land Trees district filed suit against the school board 'in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Coffee-Nut Bars 2 tbsps. freeze-dried or instant Sanka decaffeinated coffee 1 tbsp. hot water 1 cup unsifted all-purpose flour 1/2 tsp. double-acting baking powder 1/2 tsp. salt 1 /8 tsp. baking soda 3/4 cup chopped pecans ' 1 /3 cup butter or margarine 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar 1 egg, slightly beaten 1 tsp. vanilla Dissolve coffee in water; set aside. The suit claimed that the board, by removing nine books from school libraries, vio- lated both New York and U.S. constitutional guarantees of freedom of expression. "In an amicus brief filed by the American Jewish Committee and other organizations, the authors of the brief note that they were astounded that 'The Fixer' (-by Bernard Malamud) 'was banned be- cause it contained anti- Semitic references. That as- sertion can lead to only one of two conclusions: that its author is either illiterate or dishonest. (The book) clearly condemns anti- Semitism, as it does the authoritarian society which is the seedbed of anti- Semitism.' " Jenkinson is a former vice president of the National Council of Teachers of English and chairman of its committee against censor- ship. Currently professor of English education at In- diana University, he has been featured in People magazine and on the Phil Donahue Show regarding his research on censorship in the U.S. MOVIE GUIDE BERKLEY THEATRE 2990 W. 12 Mile Rd.
