The poll, which appeared in the Aug. 16 issue of Newsweek, was based on telephone interviews with 752 adults and contained questions whose answers were compared with an- swers to the same questions in a survey conducted a year ago. Those who said they were less sym- pathetic to Israel totaled 41 percent in the current poll, an increase of four percent over 1981. The AJC analysis noted that "the small percentages who moved from one attitude to an- other would seem to can- cel each other out, indi- cating that actually very little change in people's sympathies had oc- curred, notwithstanding the Lebanese action." A similar question was asked concerning attitudes toward the Palestinians. In the current poll, 28 percent of the respondents stated they were more sympathe- tic to the Palestinian posi- tion than they had been a year before. This was an in- crease of 6 percent over the 1981 poll. At the same time, 40 percent of the current poll stated that they were less sympathetic to the Palestinians, an increase of four percent over 1981. Meanwhile, 52 percent of the people contacted in a Detroit News poll last week said Israel was not justified in its invasion of Lebanon. The News, which tele- phoned 500 residents in Macomb, Oakland and 111WOORM Friday, August 20, 1982 15 NEW HOURS etveler Wayne counties, reported that 33 percent said the Is- raeli invasion was justified and 15 percent had no opin- ion. Despite the sentiment against Israel's actions, 62 percent of those questioned said the Palestine Libera- tion Organization was still a threat to Israel. On the issue of U.S. mili- tary aid for Israel, 44 per- cent of the respondents fa- vored a reduction, nine per- cent favored an increase, 44 percent thought U.S. aid to Israel should remain at cur- rent levels and three per- cent voiced no opinion. We are deeply troubled that this technique of the "big lie" had such a strong impact on media coverage of the Lebanon situation. An Opportunity for Lebanon We are encouraged by the voices coming from the Lebanese people themselves, telling the world about the true nature of the PLO and Syrian presence and about their own aspirations for a new Lebanon. We hope and pray that the Lebanes,e people will grasp the historic oppojtunity to reestablish a strong govern- ment with representation from all the people and serving the welfare of all the people. We urge our own government to continue to work in close cooperation with Israel, our most dependable allyin the Middle East. Free of the PLO presence in Lebanon, our government can help explore the possibilities of reconstitut- ing an independent and sovereign Lebanon as well as new opportunities that now exist for negotiations with Arab states and Palestinian Arabs for a durable peace in the Middle East. VISA & MASTERCHARGE Christians in Solidarity With Israel We speak as Christians who share a common concern for Israel notwithstanding many theological and political differ- ences. Our solidarity with the Jewish people and the State of Israel is part of a commitment to peace and justice for all people in the Middle East. We believe that it is the basic right and duty of every government to ensure the safety and security of its citizens. Hence we hold that the Israeli action against the heavily- armed PLO and Syrian forces in Lebanon was a justified response of a sovereign state to repeated provocations and attacks against Israel's civilian population in the Galilee. Defaming the Jewish People We protest the wide- spread use of references to Hitler, genocide and the Holocaust in reports on the events in Lebanon. We believe that resort to such language has_its source in a well-orchestrated cam- paign by those who not only oppose Israeli policies but seek to defame the Jewish people as a whole. While we as Christians deeply lament all victims of this military action, and particularly the loss of life among civil- ians, we also note the growing number of independent reports OM= VISA' • • • • ft) • •
