During a meeting of the
faction Monday there were
mutual recriminations over
the lack of party clarity on
this issue and criticisms
that the public statements
of some of its leaders blur-
red differences between the
Alignment and the Likud
coalition.
Yair Tzaban of Mapam
sparked the fight when he
demanded the establish-,

commission to investigate
the various aspects of the
war in Lebanon.
But Labor Party leader
Shimon Peres rejected
the demand, saying that

it was too early to con-
duct such an investiga-
tion, hat the proper time
would be when the war
ends.
At the Alignment faction
meeting Monday, Yehezkel
Zakai asked that the party
demand that Defense
Minister Ariel Sharon be
dismissed.
Peres rejected this, say-
ing: "If we ask for his dis-
missal we will play into the
hands of the premier. Begin
wants to cast the entire re-
sponsibility (of the conduct
of the war) on the defense
minister, but the entire
Cabinet is responsible. It is
for Begin himself to resign."
Meanwhile, Premier
Menahem Begin called on
Cabinet ministers to "hold
the fire" against Sharon in
order to preserve the unity
of the government at this
delicate stage of the negoti-
ations to get the PLO forces
out of Lebanon.
Begin sought to cool,
down tempers over the
weekend following the
confrontation between
the ministers and Sharon

week, a meeting that was

NEW YORK — The
World Jewish Congress re-
ports that the United_Na-
dons will hold an "Interna-
tional Conference on the
Question of Palestine" in
Paris during 1983 and that
an emergency special ses-
sion of the General Assem-
bly on Palestine was to be
resumed this week.
The General Assembly
has recommended that
Paris be the venue of the in-
ternational conference.
The Conference on Pales-
tine has originally been
proposed by the General As-
sembly at its last session.
Under terms of a resolution
it adopted at that session,
the General Assembly de-
cided to convene a Confer-
ence on Palestine no later
than 1984, and authorized
the Palestine Committee to
serve as a preparatory body.
The Palestine Committee,
comprised overwhelmingly
of states maintaining no
diplomatic relations with
Israel, has been repeatedly
denounced by Israel repre-
sentatives as a tool of the

described as the most
tense and bitter session
ever held.
Sharon, who found him-
self almost completely iso-
lated at that session, was
under fire for the heavy
bombardment of west Be-
irut earlier in the day, a
bombardment which almost
all the ministers criticized
as not in accordance with
government decisions.
Despite the sharp ex-
changes bctween Begin and
Sharon last week, political
circles said that the pre r

"there was no breach and no
crisis of confidence between
the two." Sharon made it
clear that he has no inten-
tion of resigning.

BONN (JTA) — A West
German sport organization,
Hessischer Sport Jugend,
has cancelled a visit of an
Israeli sports delegation to
Frankfurt because of the
war in Lebanon.
Members of the West
German organization had
previously visited Israel
and were hosted there by a
sports association. While
the move the the Hessischer
Sport Jugend was aimed at
showing displeasure with
Israel's policy in Lebanon, it
also reflected the concern of
the authorities over provid-
