62 Friday, August 13, 1982 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 'Peace for Galilee' Creates Sharp Divisions By MOSHE RON The Jewish News Special Israel Correspondent TEL AVIV — Operation Peace for Galilee has al- ready lasted eight weeks. There are sharp polemics about the war. The Peace Now movement maintains that the Israeli army should not invade west Beirut be- cause it would mean a lot of casualties. It is against widening the scope of the war beyond a security zone of 40 to 50 kilometers north of the border of Galilee. A few weeks ago, the Peace Now movement or- ganized a big demonstra- tion in Tel Aviv. About 100,000 people took part. In answer to this, the govern- ment organized a counter- demonstration which was attended by about 200,000 persons. Premier Menahem Begin, Defense Minister Ariel Sharon and Interior Minister Yosef Burg were the main speakers. Dr. Burg sharply at- tacked the opposition, stres- r sing that their policy con- cerning Operation Peace for Galilee encourages Yasir Arafat. This speech caused an uproar in the Knesset. Alignment members loudly interfered with Dr. Burg when he spoke in the Knes- set. They accused Dr. Burg of calling the opposition "traitors" and of organizing the demonstration as is done by totalitarian gov- ernments. The son of Dr. Burg, Abraham, who fought in the Lebanon war, was a member of a three-man delegation of front-line soldiers who met Begin and spoke out against widening the scope of the war. The Israeli press is full of polemics about the war and about the question whether Israel should invade west Beirut in order to liquidate the terrorists. They criticized Labor Party Secretary Gen- eral Haim Barley's declara- tion that "exactly as this government has led us into Beirut, it could lead us into Amman." They also attacked Abba Eban for his statement that the "discussion on Opera- tion Peace for Galilee has some connection with Judea and Samaria." There are leaders of the opposition who maintain that as long as the fighting continues against the Palestinian terrorists and against the Syrian army, there should not be any criticism or polemics be- cause this could weaken the morale of the soldiers. The military rabbinate (the Army Chaplains Branch) is very active on military bases in Leba- non. Special "mobile Torah tents" are visiting the bases to enable soldiers to pray or to study Talmud. They are working day and night and are accompanied by ordained military rabbis. A mobile yeshiva was also introduced and many non- religious soldiers are join- ing the prayer services. ** * The Palestinian ter- rorists had planned terror acts in several towns in Is- rael. In one PLO hideout in Bethlehem a number of forged entrance tickets to the Tel Aviv Habima Thea- ter were found. It is quite clear that the terrorists planned to bomb the thea- ter. ** * A Protestant minister in a village in south. Lebanon told Israeli journalists that once terrorists came to his church and demanded that he preach in favor of the PLO. He refused. Next day, some armed terrorists broke into his house and abused his 16-year-old daughter in front of him and cut her breasts with knives. Many such outrages have been committed by the PLO in his village, he said. * * * The Israeli army erected Hebrew road- signs in Beirut and along the roads in Lebanon di- recting drivers how to travel through southern Lebanon to Beirut. These signs are illuminated by night. There are also He- brew signs inside towns and villages pointing to parking places and to out-of-bounds areas, etc. private cars came to the Rosh Hanikra borderpost and announced their willingness to take every soldier coming back on leave, in their private cars, straight to his home, wher- ever it may be. Since new immigrants are not enlisted for army service, they wanted to participate in their own way in Operation Peace for Galilee. They brought along with them drinks, candy and sand- wiches for the soldiers. * * * The great humanitarian aid extended by the Israeli soldiers to the Lebanese population is very visible. Israeli soldiers help the sick. Children are trans- ported by helicopter to hos- pitals in Israel. One army unit found a widow with seven small children. Her husband had been shot by the terrorists. The Israeli soldiers pro- vided the family with food and medical help. * * * Collette Joulin from . Klea village in south Lebanon gave birth to a child at the hospital In Safed. After consulting with her husband, the couple decided to call the baby boy "Menahem Be- gin" as expression of their gratitude. "Begin has freed us from the yoke of the terrorists" the happy mother said. ** The Israeli army has as- signed a special group of officers to Lebanon to or- ganize the administrative and municipal institutions, including local police units and courts with Lebanese judges. Many of these in- stitutions were re-activated for the first time since the PLO took over in Lebanon.
