The memory of Jewish soldiers in the Russian Army who died fighting Nazi Germany was preserved by an organiza- tion of local Russian-Jewish immigrants in the form of a garden of 154 trees planted in Israel through the Jewish National Fund. The group, the Commit- tee of Veterans and Invalids of World War II of Greater Detroit, presented a check for the garden to Edward Rosenthal, JNF executive director at a meeting of Yeshivath Beth Yehudah. The group offers absorption Army Graduate Dr. Wilbert Simkovitz, a civilian engineer and attor- ney who does engineering work for the government, recently graduated from the U.S. Army War College. Dr. Simkovitz and one other civilian completed the two-year program with 170 Army, Reserve and Na- tional Guard colonels. Kugel Recipe for Holidays Dishes made with honey are particularly appropri- ate for Rosh Hashana when wishes for a sweet year abound. This honey barley kugel makes a fine accom- paniment to a Rosh Hashana dairy meal. HONEY BARLEY KUGEL 4 cups water COME SEE THE TERRIFIC TRANSITION DRESSES FOR THE HOLIDAYS 1 tsp. salt 3/4 cup regular barley 1 cup cottage cheese 1 cup dairy sour cream 4 eggs, beaten V2 cup raisins 1/2 cup honey 1/4 cup butter or margarine, melted 1 tsp. vanilla In large saucepan, bring water and salt to a boil; add barley. Cover; simmer about 1 hour or until barley is tender. Drain; cool. Heat oven to 350 degrees. In large bowl, com- bine barley with remaining in- gredients; mix well. Pour into ungreased 11x7- inch baking dish. Bake 40 to 45 minutes or until knife inserted in center comes out clean. Serve warm. Makes 8 to 10 servings. VARIATION: Substitute 1 cup quick barley for regular barley; decrease water to 3 cups. Decrease cooking time of barley to 10 to 12 minutes. Proceed as recipe directs.
