THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Anti-Israel Ad Queried NEW YORK — The American Jewish Congress has asked the Department of Justice to investigate the source of funds used to place an anti-Israel advertise- ment in major newspapers across the country by a mys- tery group calling itself "Concerned Americans for Peace." In a letter to Attorney General William French Smith, the executive direc- tor of AJCongress, Henry Siegman, suggested that funds for the July 11 adver- tising campaign may have come from Arab sources and may involve violation of the Foreign Agents Registra- ,-- 'on Act or other federal Pro-PLO, Pro-Israel Students Clash in South Africa JOHANNESBURG (JTA) — Student meetings at the University of the Witwatersand were banned last week after clashes on campus between Israeli and pro-PLO members of the Black Students Society (BSS). But when the soldiers fi- nally entered the building to ensure that it was free of terrorists they found it was a fortified strongpoint more than a museum, with sandbag emplacements and guns and artillery pieces mounted on statue bases. The museum area, the nearby Hippodrome racet- rack and the wooded Beirut forest area gives the Israeli forces a considerable tacti- cal advantage, as the region commands the surrounding city area from which ter- rorists have been firing at Israeli forces and the Chris- tian area in Beirut. elusion of the meeting when the clench-fisted Moslems and blacks, chanting "viva the PLO," clashed with a thousand Jewish students who had attended a pro-Israel rally nearby. Twelve university stu- dents were suspended in connection with the clashes when security men had to separate the BSS and the Jewish students. Reasons given for the suspension in- cluded using insulting lan- guage, punching, provoca- tive behavior and disobey- ing an order of Vice Chan- cellor D. J. Du Plessis. Du Plessis had to inter- vene in the protest, and be- gged the students to refrain from violence. When he asked them to disperse they were reluctant to do so and he consequently handed some of them over to secu- rity officials. The students now face a hearing by a disciplinary committee which will de- termine their future.
