paneling from Taiwan .
Also from Taiwan is a
handcarved dragon
opening leading from one
room to another.
Mike Che, owner of New
Mandarin Garden, is a
former head waiter and
manager of out-state
Chinese restaurants . . . His
hostesses, Che Yuan (same
first name as Mike's last
name but the Chinese char-
acters are different) and
Christine Wong are smil-
ing, personable lassies.
Mandarin folk art is
shown in the special dishes
that have "floral" decora-
tions like roses, etc. .. .
made from abalone,
cucumber, carrots, eggs, etc.
CALYPSO RHYTHMS
and the happy sound of jazz
flute are coming up at
Chuck Muer's P'Jazz when
the Trinidad Tripoli Steel
Band and Alexander Zonjic
perform on the poolside ter-
race at Hotel Pontchartrain
this Monday and Wednes-
day, respectively.
- These two bands have
proven the most popular of
local groups at P'Jazz over
the last two years.
The sons and daughters,
nieces and nephews of
Trinidad Tripoli Steel Band
leader Hugh Borde pound a
sweet, liquid sound out of
their finely tuned oil drums,
performing classical, R and
B, pop, latin and calypso
"And I'm looking forward to seeing
all my friends! i hope you'll plan a
visit soon to Wicker Works, where we
still serve all your favorites, including
our 25-foot Salad Bar, wines and
cocktails. We also feature "Wicker
Works To Go:' our tasty take-out
meals that go wherever and whenever
you go. So for your active Summer,
it's "Wicker Works To Go!"
Looking forward to seeing you:'

SUTHERLAND'S Fam-
ily Dining on Orchard Lake
Rd. just south of Maple, is
the former Friar Tuck's .. .
and under new ownership
. . . Entrance and parking is
in front and back . . . I re-
member when Larry
Stocker had it as Fiddler On
The Rye and many people
thought it didn't have an
entrance until discovering
the one in back . . . When
Friar Tuck's took over, the
new front wooden door
blended with the building
and couldn't be seen.
New owner Fred White
has had Sutherland's since
June 1 of this year . . . and
one of the first things he did
was make part of the frint
door leaded glass . . . Also
sailboat pencil and ink
drawings are on the walls
instead of friars painted in
various scenes . . . The sail-
boat drawings are classics.
Sutherland's is open
seven days, seats 100,
all booths . . . with two
styles of menu, regular and
lo-cal . . . Omelets and sea-
food are big things on the
regular menu . . . (There's a
Sloppy Jim sandwich made
with chopped veal instead of
chopped meat as in a Sloppy
Joe.) . . . The lo-cal menu in-
cludes 18 dishes plus 18 fro-
zen desserts and baked
goods.
New owner Fred White
grew up in the restaurant
game . . . sorting bottles
when 11 years old at Uncle
James Sutherland's High-
land Fish and Chips in Red-
ford . . . staying until
graduating high school .. .
washing dishes, short order
cook, fish prepper, etc. .. .
At Wayne State U., he
taught physical education
. . . and also worked part
time at Uncle Jim Suther-
land's eatery in Livonia .. .
quitting the teaching post to
work full time for him as
manager.
GOLE-
GEORGE
MATIS at Georgio's on
Greenfield and Lincoln
has now glorified the good
old American hamburger as
a gourmet delight . . . If de-
sired, he serves it open-face
with chutney, dijon mus-
tard and bordelaise sauce.
George with his counter-
side gourmet dining at 17
stools, five two-top tables
and two booths, amazingly
serves around 700 people
daily . . . selling gourmet
delicacies so low because he
cuts his own meat and keeps
the overhead to a bare
minimum . . . Steak Diane,
$6.25, Veal Picante, Mar-
sala and Scallopini, $5.95,
Beef Carpetbag, $6.95,
Steak au Poivre $6.95, Filet
of Sole, $4.95, Chicken
Picante $5.25, Ocean Perch,
$4.95 . . . all served with
soup, salad and fresh veget-
ables.
Try George's chopped sir=
loin with mushrooms and
red wine sauce . . . or his de-
licious Caesar Salad .. .
Also Cherries Jubilee
cooked in kirsch and flamed
. . . or wife Maria's Pistachio
Pie . . . George and Maria
took over the former Spiro's
in November 1981.
