READERS WRITE...
about restaurants . . . "We
dined for the first time at
San Marino restaurant out
here in Pontiac. Gus the
owner (his first name was
all he told us when asked),
has been open 10 months
and he'll die there if he
doesn't soon get some re-
spected review coverage.
His chef experience (he does
all the cooking) is vast —
having worked at Lelli's,
Larco's, Mario's. In fact his
head waiter worked as wai-
ter at Larco's for 18 years.
"His restaurant is located
in the IGA mall at the inter-
section of Walton Blvd. and
N. Perry. It's a dumpy-
looking mall, and his sig-
nage out front is the pits,
and his interior ambiance
leaves a lot to be desired.
But! His food is terrific!
"He's obviously a man of
fine integrity. He spoke
pridefully to us about his
standards of food quality
and preparation and his
product proves this to be
true. His veal dishes are the
usual, but those we tried
were wonderfully tasty. I
had his chicken tetrazzini
and it was just marvelous,
and you know I'm sure how
poorly this is done in local
eateries.
"His portions are very
generous — from salad
all the way' through
entree and accompani-
ments. His pasta he
makes himself, on a little
manual machine. His
pricing is very much in
the reasonable range —
especially in view of his
delivering a meal the size
of Lelli's — in the 'old
days.
"A big salad, served with
side platter of fresh vegeta-
bles, olives, peppers. Good
bread — but not great
breadsticks. Soup also
`comes with' as does sizeable
portion of side-dish
spaghetti. Full bar service.
Service was class A in at-
tentiveness and all other
ways.
"Our dining companions,
Dr. and Mrs. Jack Man-
diberg, are fully as tough to
please when it comes to eat-
ing as are we — so we con-
sider the four of us to be very
tough taken together, and
