Bibliobuses' Now Rolling
Through Jerusalem Streets
JERUSALEM — Six days
a week, from early morning
through late afternoon, a
fleet of yellow trucks can
be seen parked and open
for business in many resi-
dential areas of Jerusalem.
Neighborhood children
flock to the trucks' open
doors. No, the kids aren't
buying ice cream — they are
making their weekly visit to
their library.
___ Although Jerusalem
`rides itself on its 20 public
____ibraries, there are alwa ys
new neighborhoods and ou t-
lying districts where pe r-
manent libraries have n ot
yet been built. Three mobi le
libraries — "bibliobuses" as
they are popularly name d
— regularly stop in Jewis h
and Arab neighborhoo ds
and nearby villages on a
strict schedule. Each bu
has a driver and two libr a-
rians.

L.A. Cuts Fees
LOS ANGELES (JTA) —
The Jewish Federation
,,council has won the ap-
`Nal of the Los Angeles
„ ity Council for a _measure
removing city fees on low
and moderate income hous-
ing under non-profit au-
spices.
The federation was reim-
bursed $77,045 last year for
fees paid during construc-
tion of the Westside Jewish
Center Apartments.
The fees were initiated in
Los Angeles on all construc-
tion after the Proposition 13
tax cut proposal was
adopted.

a week. Each book may
be kept a month, al-
though 75 percent of the
libraries' 112,000 users
make a new choice
weekly. Amazing as it
may seem, there is almost
no theft or mutilation of
the books, nor is there
any overdue problem.
For another additional
nominal deposit one may
check out another couple
of books.
There is an interesting
sociological difference be-
tween East and West
Jerusalem. In 'East
Jerusalem, only the chil-
dren visit and use the
Arabic mobile library and
thus it is exclusively a chil-
dren's library. The library is
parked next to schools and
the children are taken from
class to visit it during the
school year. During vaca-
tions the bibliobus still
faithfully adheres to its
schedule and the children,
accustomed to expect it,
gather at their schools to
await its arrival.
In West Jerusalem the
appearance of the bus is a
neighborhood event.
Mothers with strollers sur-
rounded by older children
crowd around the library.
Grandparents can be seen
accompanying their grand-
children. The adults also
take advantage of the lib-
raries which frequently
park alongside shopping
centers.
While more libraries are
being built in Jerusalem all
the time, the city's rapid
and constant growth keeps
up the demand for the serv-
ices of the bibliobuses.
