THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 52 Friday, August 6, 1982 Kosher Product Laws in N.Y NEW YORK (JTA) — A number of measures to strengthen legal safeguards in New York state for pur- chasers of kosher products — including what was de- scribed as a landmark re- quirement for registration of kosher delicatessens for the first time — have been signed into laws by Gov. Hugh Carey. There are more than 200 kosher delicatessens in New York state. Under a law signed July 21, which will take effect Sept. 1, operators and owners of the delicates- sens will be required to reg- ister the name of the indi- vidual who provides the rabbinical supervision which assures that the deli- catessen is kosher. The law also will re- quire registration of the name of the endorsing rabbi at slaughterhouses. Another bill, which will become law Dec. 1, requires the dating of kosher poultry which has not been eviscer- ated, soaked and salted im- mediately after ritual slaughter. He that would govern others, first should be the master of himself. — Philip Massinger WOMEN'S FASHIONS BACK TO SCHOOL FASHIONS ARRIVING DAILY! The Detroit Free Press on Sunday published in its front-page "Q" column a telephone interview with Rep. David Bonior (D-Mt. Clemens) following his re- cent visit to Israel and Lebanon along with Rep. Paul McCloskey (R-Calif.) and others. Bonior, who described himself as a strong Con- gressional supporter of Is- rael, was highly critical of Israel in his telephone interview from Cyprus. Bonior called the Israeli invasion of Lebanon "a tragedy of high propor- tions"; stated, contrary to recent reports, that destruc- tion in Lebanon was wide- spread; and claimed he found no Lebanese who were happy that Israel was driving the PLO out of Lebanon.
