Turkey Drops Boycott Clause

NEW YORK — A U.S.
investigation, initiated by a
complaint from the Ameri-
can Jewish Congress, has
led to a change of policy by
the Turkish government
regarding Turkey's cooper-
ation in Arab boycott efforts
against Israel.

Earlier this year, public
advertisements by Turkish
state agencies requesting
companies to bid on con-
struction and equipment
contracts in Turkey, fi-
nanced by a Saudi Arabia
investment fund, explicitly
barred bidders who did not
observe anti-Israel boycott
requirements established
by Saudi Arabia and other
Arab states.
The AJCongress noted
that if such a boycott re-
quirement represented
Turkish government pol-
icy, U.S. law required
that Turkey be added to
the U.S. government's
statutory list of countries
participating in the Arab
boycott of Israel. Fur-
thermore, under the law,
American companies
complying with boycott-
related requirements
would be jeopardizing
their tax benefits.
Turkey informed the U.S.
Treasury Department that
it maintains diplomatic re-
lations with Israel and
boycott restrictions would
not be placed in future bid
advertisements.

World Conclave Finds Yiddish Thriving

If , the enthusiasm,
attendance and scope of re-
presentation at the third
conference in Montreal of
the World Council on Yid-
dish and Yiddish Culture
were the yardsticks, the
Yiddish language is not
only alive and well but
thriving.
More than 300 delegates
came to the recent confer-
ence, and 200 of them came
from countries outside
North America. Authors
Elie Wiesel and Isaac
Bashevis Singer were
among the leading figures
in the world of Yiddish who
were present. Detroit dele-
gates included Mr. and Mrs.
Morris Friedman.
In numbers and breadth
of representation, the
Montreal conclave far sur-
passed the first two meet-
ings of the World Council
held in Israel. Aside from
the local delegates, local
Jews came in large numbers
to conference events open to
the public.
Arthur Lermer, chair-
man of the local ar-
rangements committee,
said he estimated that
nearly 1,200 Jews came to
a Saturday night sym-
posium on the spiritual
heritage of East Euro-
pean Jewry, held at the
Jewish Public Library.
That event was a repeat

of the turnout of the prev-
ious night when Singer
read from his works at an
oneg Shabat, according
to the Canadian Jewish
News.
In Paris, the prestigious
Sorbonne is giving courses
in Yiddish to more than 400
students, the conclave was
told by the dean of the
Jewish studies department,
Prof. Itzack Varshaysky.
Another item from France
was a report on the publica-
tion of the first major
French-Yiddish dictionary
after many years of prep-
aration.
The first annual Herschel
Rosenfeld Award, named
for the late Montreal Yid-
dish leader, was presented
to Joshua Fishman, Distin-
guished University Re-
search Professor of. Social
Science at Yeshiva Univer-
sity, for his 800-page study
of the 1,000-year history of
Yiddish, "Never Say Die."
Avrum Shumreh, head of
the Yiddish State Theater
in Warsaw, told the dele-
gates how the Polish gov-
ernment supports a studio
with a staff of 120, which
gives three performances
weekly in WarsaW and
travels to perform in
smaller communities. He
admitted that many mem-
bers of the audiences must
make use of earphones for
translations into Polish.

Canada, has adopted a
policy of multi-
lingualism and helps
support the Melbourne
school, as well as a Yid-
dish radio program

Younger participants, in
the 25-to-40 age group, were
well represented at the con-
ference. They held their
own workshop, plenary
meeting and Shabaton.
Most of them came from
New York but there were
also younger representa-
tives from Brazil, France
and Israel.
