Israel's Harry Hurwitz Exposes 'Big Lie'

them. Thus, Israel is guilty
of barbarism! Thousands
and even tens of thousands
have been killed by the ad-
vancing Israeli forces! Some
600,000 or 700,000 civilians
have been rendered home-
less or roofless!
The "statistics" are at-
tributed to the Interna-
tional Red Cross, to defunct
Lebanese authorities, to
Arab news agencies, or sim-
ply to "reliable authorities."
Once again the "Big Lie" is
at work. Israel is con-
demned and denounced by
the press, radio and televi-
sion, and even by some
well-meaning individuals
who were obviously im-
pressed by the sheer mag-
nitude of the "Lie."
What are presumed to be
"facts" are extracted and
used in newspaper and
radio advertisements and
appeals for support. Some
journalists, of course, ea-
gerly pounce on the story
and magnify the details in
the retelling, thus provid-
ing the sensation after sen-
sation for various commen-
tators and columnists.
Because of the percep-
tion that has been
created, it is necessary to

present the other side of
the story, the details that
have been uncovered by
the Israel authorities
who are now responsible
for the population in
southern Lebanon and
by completely impartial
observers such as col-
umnists Evans and
Novak, Congressman
Charles Wilson and
others.
• There simply are not
and never have been
700,000 people in the area
presently under Israel con-
trol — not even 600,000 nor
500,000 nor 400,000 — so
how could 600,000 have
been rendered roofless?
Even if every building
and every house in southern
Lebanon no longer existed
or was damaged to an extent
that it could not be occupied,
there would not be 600,000
roofless. Observers have
testified, however, that
whole areas, whole villages,
were untouched. Large
numbers of buildings were
unscathed and thousands of
homes were in no way af-
fected by Israel military op-
erations.
• In order to avoid or re-
duce the number of civilian
casualties, Israel took great
care to urge the law-abiding
population to vacate their
apartments and private
homes before the military
entered the area. Thus, in
Sidon, tens of thousands,
heeding the warnings and
appeals, left their homes
and waited on the nearby
beach until the operation
was over. They have now re-
turned to their homes.
• After careful investi-
Israel
gation,
the
authorities have ascer-
tained that in all of
Lebanon
southern
(excluding the quarter in
southwest Beirut occu-
pied by the PLO) some
20,000 people are, for the
time being, roofless. Re-
pair work and recon-
struction is already in
progress, as life returns
to normal.
• In Tyre, Sidon, and
Nabatiya where a large part
of the civilian population
lives, the casualties have
been determined as follows:
331 killed (56 in Tyre, 265
in Sidon, 10 in Nabatiya);
1,110 wounded, of whom
200 are still hospitalized.
It has been established
that 1,000 terrorists died in
the battles, 5,000 were
taken prisoner and approx-
imately 6,000 are still in
southwest Beirut.
• The Israel losses are
290 dead and 1,500
wounded. The nation
mourns her fallen soldiers
and regrets the death of
every other person in this
conflict. Every life is preti-
ous. But what a far cry from
the fabricated statistics of
tens of thousands reported
killed by the PLO and their
agents and the 700,000 roof-
less!
• The Lebanese popu-
lation has, according to
Congressman Wilson,
welcomed the Israelis
like a "libertion army."
Eye-witnesses report

happy citizens and vil-
lagers greeting the as-
tonished Israelis with
song and dance, with the
traditional sugar-
covered rice and other
symbols of friendship.
"Now we are safe. Now we
can go home," Lebanese
men and women told the
U.S. Congressman. And a
doctor stressed in a talk
with columnists Evans and
Novak that "compared to
the hell we have had in
Lebanon (under the PLO)
the Israelis are brothers."
An entirely different per-
ception!
The motive of the PLO in
disseminating the
Goebbels-type propaganda
is understood. They have no
case. They have no justifica-
tion for the carnage they
caused and, therefore, ex-
pect to arouse sympathy by
misrepresenting the facts.
But the motive of some of
the media in giving cur-
rency to the "Big Lie" defies
comprehension. They are,
after all, equipped and able
to distinguish between
truth and fiction, fact and
fantasy.

BONN (JTA) — The office
of the State Prosecutor in
Bremen has opened an in-
vestigation into the role of
Kurt Becher, a local grain
merchant and former aide of
SS chief Heinrich Himmler,
in the mass shootings of
Jews during World War II.
Scores of organizations in
Bremen have protested the
failure of the authorities to
take Becher to court despite
widespread documentation
of his activities with the SS.
