46 Friday, August 6, 1982 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Young Distributor Is Atypical Hollywood Success Story By HERBERT LUFT (Copyright 1982, JTA, Inc.) HOLLYWOOD — Tamar E. Glaser, at 23, is one of the youngest motion picture distributors on the West Coast. A native of Beverly Hills and great-granddaughter of the legendery Max Factor, the remarkable young woman has more than 10 years experience in the in- dustry, having completed her first film, shot on loca- tion in Century City, Los Angeles, at the age of 12. Now, with her theatrical syndication and cable dis- tribution company, Glaser Productions, she has emerged as a successful Hollywood executive. Deeply steeped in the tra- dition of show business, she became a student intern at the William Morris agency while still in the ninth grade, followed by assugn- ments as a "gofer", on the film "Gable and Lombard" and as an extra in the re- make of "King Kong." Being somewhat of a pioneer in the cable in- dustry, Ms. Glaser be- came • programming di- rector for Radio Airlift, the student station for Beverly Hills High School. While only in the 11th grade, she was in charge of all on-air pro- gramming and hosted her own show for the sta- tion, which was broad- 'ELECTROLYSIS ORKS! iHELEN ZINBERG 'WE HAVE BEEN HELPING PEOPLE FOR 23 YEARS RID ,THEMSELVES OF UNSIGHTLY HAIR. Still a youngster, she be- came a delegate to both the Congressional Seminar in Washington, D.C. and the Youth and Government Program in Sacramento, Cal. Under the direction of Dr. William Jones, founder of the USA Film Festival, she majored in film writing, theory and criticism, started to produce 16mm films, and completed her first screenplay. One.of the highlights of her college career was her participation in a seminar hosted by di- rector Ingmar Bergman in tributors. With success in releasing her initial product to such pay networks as ON-TV in Los Angeles and Cincin- nati, Spectrum of Chicago, Spotlight, and subscription television of Texas, Cleve- land and New England, as well as to theaters and fes- tivals across the U.S. she HAIFA — A 550-yard- long promenade along the Mediterranean is the newest beauty spot in Haifa. The promenade leads to the point where Mount Carmel descends to the sea, thus providing a physical link between the city's two main attractions. The promenade fronts one of the city's oldest and most picturesque quarters — Bat Galim, which means "daughter of the sea." The area leads down to the sea in various irregularly formed stone steps and features palm-shaded gardens and areas for fishing. When a group of Israeli soldiers wrote Prime Minister Begin recently in order to convey their heartfelt emotions about their presence and actions in Lebanon, he responded to the effect that their only concern was to obey orders. Is this blind obedience what Mr. Begin demands from us as American Jews? Is this the only way to express our solidarity with Israel? Nahum Goldman, former President of the World Zionist Organization and of the World Jewish Congress, offered the following advice to supporters of Israel: "The real friends of Israel, both Jews and non-Jews should understand that there is no better way of helping Israel than by criticizing its policies in a friendly way and endeavoring by argument and pressure to have it change them." Accordingly, it is inappropriate to dismiss the agruments of the peace forces in Israel and the American Jewish community without due consideration of their contents. Sentiments which preclude questioning certain of the policies of the present government in Israel and the real tragedies of the invasion of Lebanon only assist in perpetuating the belief that American Jews are incapable of distinguishing between Is- rael the country and particular government policies. Thus, the Jewish community and its leaders and media have a respon- sibility to question the political premises for the invasion of Leba- non and its consequences, not out of a spirit of partisanship, but out of a desire to find a way to peace and justice in the Middle East that guarantees Israel's long-term survival and a solution to the Palestinian quesiton. Only by questioning the rightness or wrongness of the Israeli government's premises and directions for its policy in Lebanon can we share in the effort to protect the Israel we love. FOR MORE INFORMATION WRITE NEW JEWISH AGENDA, P.O. Box 37029, Oak Park, MI 48231 The Haifa Develop- ment Association is also planning to link the promenade with Mount Carmel by cable car and to construct a scenic series of stairs from the Carmelite monastery on the promontory down to the sea, leading past such historical sights as a 17th Century windmill and Elijah's cave, for ages a revered site for Jews, Christians and Moslems. The cable car will not be the first in Haifa, often de- scribed as Israel's most "European" city. For many years Mount Carmel and the port area have been linked by an underground cable railway, the "Car- melit," that whisks passengers up and down in minutes. The new cable car will have the advantage of taking in the magnificent panoramas of the sea, the city and the hills of Galilee that make Haifa so unique.
