Danny Raskin's

ANNOUNCING

IThe Best of Everything)

THE RAINS started
coming like the torrential
waters of India as we made
it to the covered entrance.
This was Tuesday of that
gala two-day grand opening
at the Sheraton-Oaks Hotel
on Novi Road north of the
1-96 intersection.
Between 800 and 1,000
people attended the dazzl-
ing display of foods that
made it look like an inter-
national festival of foods.
In the large ballroom, Mel
Ball and Colours flayed
away at his red hot type of
music ... amid an array of
foods tha
t might have re-
sembled a gourmand con-
vention.
Nothing was missed ...
or spared ... as various
stations of delicacies dis-
played for take-all-you-
want consumption, de-
lighted so many people
who ate like it was their
last meal.
Keith Famie, chef de
cuisine of the soon-to-open
Raphael's gourmet dining
room at Sheraton-Oaks,
was at the area of elegant
pates, gallentines, etc.
Executive Chef Remy
Berdy (never knew his
given name is Jerome), was
undoubtedly proud of the
entire goings-on . . . as was
Director of Food and Bever-
ages Henrik Jensen. It
was a bonanza of delight for
so many.
Meanwhile, the lobby was
becoming jammed also .. .
and music in the atrium was
by the very popular
Trinidad Tripoli Steel Band
. . . as scrumptious desserts
by Pastry Chef Peter Loren
lined an area . . . while the
center region was used for
serving cocktails at one bar
. . and various types of
rich* , exotic coffees at an-
other.
A huge cake in the
lobby by Peter, weighed
310 pounds . . . with the
map of Michigan sur-
rounded by Ontario, Wis-
consin, Indiana, Ohio
and waterways with
ships.
Everyone is so congenial
and friendly at Sheraton-
Oaks . . . Diane Lux, daugh-
ter of Ellen and Herbert
Lux, hostess at Anthony's,
the very fine informal res-
taurant, wears a Jewish
star with "Love" woven
throughout . . . Shelby Fox,
assistant director of food
and beverages, is the perfect
right hand for Henrik .. .
Joel Gordon started as a
cook when the hotel re-
cently opened . . . and is now
chef du provision ... . pur-
chasing all the food items
for Sheraton-Oaks.
The second night had
Woody Herman and his
Thundering Herd in the bal-
lroom . * . and the Trinidad
Tripoli Steel Band return-
ing to the atrium.
Just a very loose approx-
imate of some cif the food
that was consumed* .
10,000 shrimp, 1,200 each
clams, oysters and mussels,
eight large top rounds of
beef, 20 pounds of chicken
livers, 400 chicken breasts,

two dozen ducks, one dozen
sides of smoked salmon, at
least 12 differnt types of
bread. 8,000 open-faced
Danish sandwiches, at least
a ton of fruits and vegeta-
bles (cantalopes, melons,
etc.) . . . 500 burritos, 500
tacos, four gallons of
guacamole, assorted cakes
and tortes galore, 100
pounds of chocolate for the
1,500 truffles, 400 gallons of._
coffee, etc., etc.,etc.
The Sheraton-Oaks
Hotel, located on the west
side of Novi Roa=d
across from 12-Oaks Mall
... gives the concept of a
roadside inn combined
with a large suburban
hotel ... It is a 220-room
contemporary three-
story brick structure
situated on seven acres.
Enhanced by live trees,
the spectacular atrium area
houses a swimming pool
and jacuzzi, a waterfall
sculpture and poolside sip-
ping areas . . . In the main
lobby is a nine-foot acrylic-
collage painting by Linda
Zalla.
With Executive Chef
Remy (Jerome) Berdy head-
ing its kitchen force of top
professionals, Sheraton-
Oaks caters to casual diners
as well as both convention
and overnight guests .. .
