NEW YORK — The head
of a New York-based adver-
tising agency said Tuesday
that a political advertise-
ment it placed in five news-
papers, which appeared to
attribute anti-Israel senti-
ments to six relief organiza-
tions, had been handled in
violation of company policy.
Bernard Hodes, president
of Bernard Hodes Advertis-
ing, said the executive re-
sponsible for the advertise-
ment had lacked sufficient
knowledge of the group that
requested it and had been
seeking only to increase the
agency's revenue.
The full-page advertise-
ment appeared July 11 in
the New York Times, the
Chicago Tribune, the Wash-
ington Post, the Atlanta
Journal and Constitution
and the Los Angeles Times.
Headlined "The People
of Lebanon, Innocent
Victims of a Senseless
War," the advertisement
criticized the Israeli in-
vasion of Lebanon and
listed the names and ad-
dresses of six indepen-
dent relief organizations
with aid programs for
civilians in Lebanon. The
organizations disavowed
any connection with it.
The advertisement was
signed "Concerned Ameri-
cans for Peace," and gave as
its address a Los Angeles
post office box that postal of-
ficials said had never been
rented.
A man identified as Craig
Lane placed the ads with
the aid of a Los Angeles law

JERUSALEM (JNI) —
The Merkava tank, used by
Israel during the Lebanon
invasion, was the result of
15 years of experimentation
and study.
Unable to buy modern
tanks abroad, Israel turned
to its technologists, who de-
veloped the innovative tank
which recently demon-
strated its overall superior-
ity against the most-
advanced Soviet models,
like the T-72.

firm. A Los Angeles adver-
tising agency was also re-
ported to be involved, but
was rebuffed when it at-
tempted to place reprints of
the ad in California news-
papers.
An ad with similar sen-
timents, carrying 400 sig-
natures, was placed in San
Francisco in June.
The New York Times,
reported that the July 11
ads, with a cost of
$107,000-$113,000, were
paid for with funds trans-
ferred from a Swiss bank
to the Mitsui Manufac-
turers Bank- - in Los
Angeles, where the
Hodes agency has an ac-
count.
A spokesman for the
Anti-Defamation League in
California said the advertis-
ing has all the char-
atteristics of an Arab prop-
aganda operation.
