after participating in an in-
ternational cardiological
congress.
Dr. Yehoshua Roten-
streiGh, one of the
most famous lawyers in Is-
el, who is president of the
ress Council, accompanied
the delegation. He said that
one of the reasons the
Soviets extended visas to an

It took another 90 min-
utes before the Israeli dele-
gation was led to their
rooms. A policeman accom-
panied them to get the keys
for the rooms. On leaving
the room, one has to turn in
the key and get a receipt.
Without this receipt one
cannot enter or leave the
hotel or get the key.
After having put_ away
the luggage, the delegation
was called to the corridor. A
security officer welcomed
them in English. He said,
"Owing to the current
events in the Middle East
(the war in Lebanon) and as
there are also in Moscow
foreign elements and
hotheads, the delegation is
asked not to go out indi-
vidually but only in groups.
We shall do' everything in
order to protect you."
It is assumed that the
Soviet authorities wished
to prevent the Israeli
delegation from meeting
Soviet Jews. There was
one among the hotel em-
ployees who spoke He-
brew.
On every floor there were
employees of the hotel,
members of the "Intourist"
and security people.
The solemn opening of the
congress took place in a hall
in the Kremlin which can
hold 6,000 persons. Next to
Prof. Neufeld sat the
president of the Soviet
Association, Prof. Zesov,
who is the personal doctor of
Leonid Brezhnev.
The, representatives of
the Soviet government
stressed in . their speeches
political aspects, especially
that the Soviet Union st-
rives for peace against all
who wish to destroy the
world. After the opening
session the delegates were
invited to a performance of
"Don Quixote" at the Bol-
shoi Theater.
When the delegations
walked through the
streets of Moscow, they
realized that all for-
eigners were watched
carefully, especially' the
